I agree, the Keys may not have the greatest beaches, but by no means is Bahia Honda State Park a run down destination as many seem to perceive it. I camp out in the park every year, and every single year I encounter many volunteers who are lending their time and effort to resurrect this beach. Whether it be combing the beach, throwing conch back into the waters who have become washed up in the shallows, or just manning the mangrove to ensure the tremendous variety of wildlife continue to strive, these volunteers dedicate themselves to bringing the beaches back in the Keys.
Also, please do not forget that Bahia Honda is one of the few beaches in the U.S. if not the world which offer a considerable drop off about 100 feet off the coast to enable avid snorklers and divers to experience the true "Keys" waters. Instead of paying all the $$$$ on charters, you can get the same glimpse of underwater life right from the beach.

Understood! Of course all charters will take you out a few miles. This is why they are called charters, and that is why they charge you quite a bit of $$$. What I am saying is that you can do quite a bit of snorkeling off shore and still see a lot of underwater life which you would see on these charters regardless. (with the exception of an abundance of coral)
BTW, If you haven't already read the message which I was initially responding to, brutus does NOT like boat excursions or tours. I believe for somebody who "likes to sit on the beach all day", Bahia Honda offers them a nice option by being able to snorkle off the shoreline.

Funny enough I have family in both places. If you want beaches Destin is best hands down. When we visit our relatives in Key West we never go on the beaches, just in the pool. The beaches in Key West aren't great at all. The Destin beaches are very nice, water is clear, and they have some public beaches that are equipped like a state park with a restroom/changing room facility.

Forget Destin. It's wall-to-wall traffic, crowds and high-rise condominiums. A little to the east of Destin is Grayton Beach and Seagrove Beach. It's got everything you're looking for. One of the top 20 restaurants in Florida (per Florida Trend Magazine) is there (Criollas) and Borago in Grayton Beach, Bud & Alley's in Seaside, and Cafe Thirty-A in Seagrove Beach are listed in the top 200. Plus miles of unspoiled beaches that aren't packing in hundreds of tourists in umbrellas that touch end to end.
For nightlife and great food (but a long wait), try Picolos Restaurant & Red Bar located in Grayton Beach. Great band and great drinks. The upstairs bar at Bud & Alleys is a great place to watch the sun set. And there are plenty of outdoor concerts all through the summer at Gulf Place, Rosemary Beach and Carillon Beach.
