Delaware Water Gap as a Destination

My husband and I love to hike and kayak - preferably in Spring or Fall when the crowds are in school. Have never been to the Delaware Water Gap area and wonder if there is enough to keep us busy for a week. We are two adults in early 50's who like to be active.

It's a beautiful area, especially during foliage time in the fall. I'm not sure if there's enough to keep you interested for week. That depends on how much hiking and kayaking you want to do!

We did a five-day canoe trip from Port Jervis to Delaware Water Gap last June and loved it. We're in our late 50s and didn't find it too difficult, but we're experienced paddlers. We camped out along the way.

You could also do shorter distances for day trips if you didn't want to camp. We saw kayakers on the trip, but I don't know where you rent kayaks. There are many people who rent canoes.

As for spending a week in the area without doing a canoe or kayak trip, that may be too much time.

There's hiking at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and I'm sure in other spots in the area. The town of Delaware Water Gap had some nice restaurants. The diner there was a real slice of Americana. We spend a couple of days after the canoe trip poking around and enjoyed it.

We stayed at the Ramada in the town of Delaware Water Gap, but there were other hotels and a couple of bed and breakfasts.

sueoz,
There is plenty of nice hiking at Delaware Water Gap. One of my favorites is the Red Dot/Blue Dot Trail to Mount Tammany (4 miles, 1200 feet vertical rise). Another is the 7 mile loop to Sunfish Pond, a beautiful glacial lake. Both can be reached from the rest area off I-80. Both are nice in Spring or Fall, although my favorite time of year for Sunfish Pond is summer when it's warm enough to take a dip (careful getting in it's rocky and slippery). There are a number of other trails in the area including the Appalachian Trail.

We spent a long weekend in the area last fall for our anniversary. Some of our memorable highlights:

Check out Bushkill Falls on the Pennsylvania side of the river. When you first get there, it seems like a total tourist trap, but then you walk through a gate into the natural area where all the waterfalls are and its very beautiful. There are wooden walkways and bridges to access different areas of the falls, but otherwise, completely natural. There are several nice hiking trails around the property where you can see all the falls and streams.

Someone also told us about an abandoned train bridge on the NJ side that you can climb up on and then walk all the way out over the Delaware River. The views were incredible. Unfortunatly I can't remember where the turn off was to access it - maybe one of the locals can help.

Back on the PA side, we also visited Dingmans Falls - less traveled than Bushkill, but not quite as scenic.

We stayed at the Inn at Millrace Pond in Hope, NJ. Would definitely recommend.
