How severe is the handicap? We did Napali Catamaran, we took off our shoes and walked 10 feet to the small boat, then we had to transfer to the catamaran. There are 2 guides on the boat that may be able to help depending on the situation. I would call the office and talk to Robin for guidance. she is very nice and gave us advice on seasickness. enjoy

MPF, are you serious about this?:
"if any of yall ever need trip advice on NE Texas ..."
I posted two recent queries on that very topic. Please do a search on my name so you can not only come out of hiding by asking questions about HI, but also answering questions about your own backyard.
Some kind fellow Fodies wrote back, but I'd love to get your advice too. You live in NE Texas--great!! Where? I'll be in that part of your state in less than a month.
As for Kauai, I've been a bunch of times, but you've already rec'd excellent advice in answer to your questions. As for rental vans, i agree with recs from icee--try Priceline and make a bid; the worst they can do is say "no" --and daydreamin, about asking your airline who they 're partnered with. On one trip, i was quoted $45/day for a car which I got for $25/day by going via Aloha Ailines customer service.
Good luck, and keep asking...and answering!!
Aloha and yeee--haw!

CaliNurse - Please see my reply to your inquiry about my little corner of the world. It may possibly be the longest post in the history of Fodors. Please feel free to send any more questions my way, and if I think of more not-to-be-missed stuff I'll post to you again.
Hilda - I will call Robin this coming week, thank you. We've decided to wait a bit on booking the boat tour because of the opposition, but I would like to have answers to the questions about getting from one boat to another anyway. We've decided to do the Na Pali boat tour even if it ends up that we have to go to Pt. Allen to do so. If that's the case I'll start over looking for a tour operator.

MPF, thank you so much for your detailed response. I love long answers, especially as (you may have noticed) I myself tend toward the verbose.
I'm printing all your (and the other NE Tex folks) suggestions. We will definitely make a 1-2 day trip in your direction in October, heading toward Jefferson,Marshall, Longview area. Whoopee! You may find this hard to believe, but I'm every bit as excited about that as you are about Kauai. The folks in your part of the USA are the friendliest I've met in any state I've been to so far, and in two previous trips to the area, i had a blast!
See the other thread about NE Tex for more response, as this one is about Kauai!!
To be a bit more helpful for your trip...
just saw a 7 passenger minivan on Hotwire's site for--including taxes and service fees--only $284 weekly rate, plugging in dates of June 4 through June 11, pickup in Lihue (LIH). Makai1 mentioned Hotwire (above) as a good source, and lately their hotel and car rental ratges have been fantastic! I guess they'd pro-rate the additional car rental day if needed it, at same rate.
If you want to see Makua /Tunnels on film, rent "Body Heat" Enjoy , and when you see that last scene of a pensive Kathleen Turner... that's your beach.

MPF - you might want to try here for a snorkel trip, even though they don't advertise it on their website.

We just did this trip in August. They launch from Anini Beach so no Hanalei use, but still not so far away as Pt. Allen. Very personal group, only 12 people. They serve lunch, and do a tour of the Napali Coast with an hour stop to snorkel.
(Actually I just did another search and found this site, see the first option.

Thank you CT. We've actually thought about chartering a boat for fishing, so I wonder if maybe we could roll everything up into one nice tidy trip. Hmmmm. Will definitely be contacting them.

We did the Napali Catamaran trip in May 2004 and LOVED it. I can't really remember much though about getting from the outrigger to the catamaran. Perhaps you could call them and explain the situation before you book and see if they anticipate any difficulty?
