We are planning a visit to D.C. in this month. We have looked in the staying at the following hotels: Our concerns is safety and centeralized location to the mall museums:

Loews L'Enfant, Governor's House, Holiday Inn-14th Street NW, Four Points Shearton, and the St. Gregory's.

Our preference is the Governor's House.

I must apologize for not getting to the point. I would like to know if anyone has stayed at these hotels and how was their stay and would they stay there again and how safe are the areas.

We are not familiar with the St. Gregory or its sister hotel, the Governor's House, so we're especially concerned about their accomodations.

Have stayed at L'Enfant although its been awhile. Nice place - I think there is an underground shopping area. Seems to be popular with families so that may be a reason to go (or stay away) for some people. It is very close to the Mall.

Haven't been in Governors House, although it is fairly newly renovated. St. Gregory is also fairly new. All are in rather odd neighborhoods, although in terms of neighborhood safety, ambience I would rank them St. Gregory, Governors, Holiday Inn, Sheraton, L'Enfant. All are failry close to Metros, although L'Enfant is closest to Mall but the most desolate/boring at night

Good question, Carol. I guess what I mean is none are in charming or lively places for an evening stroll. St. Gregory and Governors are both near Dupont Circle, but probably 4-5 blocks or so. The Sheratron, Holiday Inn, and LEnfant are in perfectly safe neighborhoods, but with little going on after 6pm and something of a walk from reasonably priced restaurants.

You mentioned safety and I am not sure what your experience. All are in very "urban" settings, some "grittier" than others (homeless, not much after 6pm). If you are used to big cities, you will unfazed. If you are not, you may be a little surprised, thus St. Gregory and Governors may be better bets. (And to described Governors as Embassy Row is a stretch, but still a nice neighborhood).

My office held a meeting earlier this summer at the St. Gregory. It is a smaller, boutique hotel and very nice. Saw the sleeping rooms and they were clean and well-appointed - I think it would generally rank as a four star hotel.

The location is pretty safe - it's about 4 blocks or so from George Washington University in one direction and pretty close to many downtown restaurants and stores in another. It isn't particularly close to the mall and museums, though. It's around 10 blocks or so from the White House area of the mall.
