The Maine State Museum is very nice, in Augusta the capitol, maybe an hour from Boothbay. not much else to do in Augusta but there are a couple of lakes in the area, a visit to a lake park might be nice because you can actually swim there which you won't do much of in Boothbay.
Plenty of hiking in Maine, that's for sure.

Joe I asked the same question on the Tripadvosor Maine forum, and will be looking forward to reading these responses. We're a family of four who also loves to eat, hike, bike, and shop (mostly in wine or gourmet food shops)
We'll be renting in a small island off of Southport Island (next to Boothbay), and I got suggestions to visit Wiscassett and the Pemaquid Peninsula.
I'm also thinking of going to Camden one day and Old Port in Portland another day. They're an hour and a half away, but if we get antsy will do it.

Camden has some interesting shopping. Stock up on unusual condiments at Stone Wall Kitchen. Go a little further north for a visit to the winery in Lincolnville (check hours for tastings). If the weather is good, consider picnicing on top of Mt Battie. We take bag chairs and binoculars. Fantastic view overlooking Camden harbor. Our, so far, favorite lobster in the rough place is Waterman's Beach not far from Owls Head Transportation Museum. Not sure when they open for the season. Take the short hike out to the Owls Head light, too. A very charming vacation cottage colony is Baypath. It's an out of the way drive. Pemaquid Point is another favorite place. Choose a spot near the lighthouse and bring binnoculars. There are two nearby lobster places. Also a good place for ice cream, Round Top I think. Damariscotta has some nice little shops. We'll be staying in Wiscasset in July but haven't spent a week in Maine for a couple of years and haven't done too much exploring in this area. We expect to settle the debate on whether Red's has the best lobster roll. Portland Old Port Area or Freeport shopping would be good for a rainy day. Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Rockland has both the transportion museum and the Farnsworth which specializes in Maine artists.

Highly recommend a visit to the new Project Puffin Center in Rockland

If the sailboat harbor tours are running in Boothbay Harbor, also recommend.
