Day trip to New Orleans
Our party of 3 adults wants to see as much as we can of this historic city. What are some must -sees and how should we see them? Bus? Carriage? We are also on a budget... Thanks for any info!

If you only have one day I would concentrate on the French Quarter. You can walk anywhere in the FQ easily. Visit Jackson Square and the riverfront area on Decatur. Visit the French Market shops and all the bars and joints on Bourbon Street. You can walk to the Central Business District on the riverside by the casino, Hilton and convention center. Go to the WWII DDay Museum. Have a po boy for lunch on a bench in Jackson Square or a muffaletta from Central Grocery. Walk past Esplanade at the E side of the FQ to Frenchment Street and visit the jazz joints and restaurants there.

I'm sure you have an itinerary and that's why you're only planning on one day, but there's so much to see and do in New Orleans that you have a great chance of being overwhelmed trying to fit it all in! Any chance you can extend the visit a couple days?

Drive into the city. Park the car. Walk to Cafe du Monde.
Have beignets and cafe au lait.
Wander around Jackson Square. Take a carriage ride to see the city.
Walk down to Harrah's Casino. Play some slots.
Eat lunch somewhere. Lots of ideas on this board.
Walk to Canal Street and St Charles and get on the St Charles streetcar. The daily pass is $5. Ride down St Charles and watch the homes of the Garden District go by.

Get off at the Riverbend. If the streetcar takes a sharp right turn, pull the cord and get off. Look around and maybe go into Cooter Brown's for something to eat and drink. They had the BEST po'boys of our trip. Get back on the streetcar and return.
If you want to see the shops on Magazine Street, get off at Eighth street. Wander down Harmony Street for a few blocks. Look at the lovely houses. Turn left on Magazine street and check out the shops. Stop at Sucre for macaroons, gelato, truffles or other treats.

Turn left and walk back toward the streetcar/ St Charles on Sixth Street. Stop and wander in Lafeyette cemetery for a few minutes.

Ride the streetcar back to Canal. Walk over to Royal Street and walk the sidewalks looking at the shops. Wander through the streets for a while just looking at stuff.
If you want to see the craziness that most people think of when they think of NOLA, then detour over to Bourbon Street for a block or two. Then detour off.
Find a place to eat dinner. (See suggestions on this board).
We enjoyed Muriel's but it may be pricier than you want.

No way to extend the stay. We are arriving from Montgomery, Al on Sunday early morning and I'm being admitted to River Oaks early Monday. That's why we want to fit in as much as we can in that short amount of time. Great ideas so far! Keep em coming and I can set up our day to make the best use of our time. Thanks!

Two comments - Cooter Brown's also makes an excellent muffaletta. If you go to the very end of the St. Charles Streetcar, you could also eat at the Camellia Grill - great omelettes, and wonderful staff.
Also, while I think the WWII Museum is one of the finer museums I've ever visited, I wouldn't even attempt it on a one day trip. We spent 3 hours, and could have spent 3 more!
