Dallas hometown....want driving trip 10-12 hrs. for a short trip....
We are retired and would like ideas of driving trips (3-5 days) from Dallas. Unfortunately, it takes about that long to get out of the STATE! We've seen just about all of texas I want to see....thought of going West toward Santa Fe or maybe if there's something along the way to Memphis. Lived in Atlanta a while and been through that area but wouldn't be opposed to going back toward Asheville ( I know that'd be a longer drive) Any and all ideas will be appreciated!!

A 10-12 hour drive opens up lots of possibilities. What are your interests? We used to live in Dallas and still live fairly close. For our weekend trips we don't like to drive more than 7 or 8 hours, in fact we usually keep in less than 5 hours. We tend to go to places with lots of outdoor activities. Here are some of the places we have been and enjoyed:
Lake Murray in Oklahoma (less than 2 hour drive) - The lake is so beautiful and clear. There is a lodge and rustic cabins to rent. Plenty of activities and Tucker Tower museum to visit. It's a short drive to visit nearby Turner Falls and Arbuckle Wilderness. http://www.travelok.com/listings/view.profile/id.4358
Beaver's Bend in Broken Bow Oklahoma (about 3 and a half hour drive) - Another Oklahoma state park with a lodge and cabins to rent. Many private cabins around also that are probably much nicer. There is a lake and river here in the foothills of the Ouachita mountains with many things to do. They stock the river at certain times of the year with rainbow trout, trails to hike, canoes to rent, etc. http://www.beaversbend.com/
DeGray Lake in Arkansas (about a four hour drive) - An absolutely beautiful lake in Arkansas located about 10 to 15 minutes off I-30. It would actually be on the way to Memphis if you wanted to do a trip there with a stop for a couple of nights along the way. This a an Arkansas state park with a lodge. The activities here are abundant also. One of my favorite places to visit. The link to the state park: http: www.degray.com Another place to stay on DeGray Lake: http://www.iron-mountain.com/ (I haven't stayed at Iron Mountain, but I have stayed at a condo at their sister resort, Mountain Harbor Resort, on Lake Ouachita and it was very nice.)
Hot Springs, Arkansas (about 5 hour drive) - This is a pretty good place to visit. We enjoyed Garvan Woodland Gardens immensely. They have horse racing in the spring if you enjoy that sort of thing. We enjoyed nearby (25-30 minutes away) Lake Ouachita. Mountain Harbor Resort and Spa has a lodge, luxury condos and cabins to rent. Many activities here and a spectacular 4th of July fireworks display. http://www.mountainharborresort.com/
Shreveport, Lousiana (about 3 hour drive) - We used to go to the horse races here. They also have other gambling casinos if you enjoy that sort of thing.
Places I haven't been yet but I think would make great trips are Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas (about 5 and a half hour drive). They have a lodge and cabins. www.petitjeanstatepark.com I'd also like to visit Mount Magazine State Park in Arkansas (about 5 and a half hours). It's a state park at the highest point in Arkansas and has a lodge and cabins. www.mountmagazinestatepark.com
Of course we've also traveled a lot throughout Texas. Have you been to Port Aransas yet? How about Big Bend in the spring?

1. Corpus Christi/Rockport/Port Aramsas if you haven't seen the coast of Texas. But it's kinda hot right now.
2.Fort Davis/Big Bend as posted above if you haven't been--again, though, it's hot right now.
3.Chattanooga, Tennessee--it's on the far end of 12 hours but east Tennessee is a WONDERFUL destination. Add a couple more hours and you're in the Smokies (also crowded right now but a wonderoftheworld!
