Knott's is less than 10 miles from Disneyland, Carin. Still, I don't know that I'd trade out time in either of the Disney parks to go to Knott's.

I've never heard of those southern CA city passes-- they must be theme park packages put together for out-of-state or foreign visitors. But it would be a real shame if you came all the way to our stunningly beautiful, endlessly interesting state and spent all your time waiting in line for roller coasters...!!

My two cents.

Knott's is fun and definitely worth a stop if you've already paid for it. There is a rollercoaster that might not be has gravity-defying all-out terrifying as some of the rides at Six Flags...is still WAY too much for me ! The chicken-dinner restaurant there is a good place for an old-fashioned American meal.

Bozi

If you do travel from the last week of August to mid-September I would start my trip in SF and not visit LA until after the Labor Day weekend when schools will be back in session and theme parks will be less crowded.

carinv...roller coasters at Knotts are a bit tamer then 6 Flags, but Knotts is still a fun place.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the thoughts.

rjw_lgb_ca,

Yes we have consulted a map, and also our friends living in SF.
We are flying using Freq. Flyer. Points and we have no choice other than to fly into LAX. ( That decision alone is saving us a bomb!)
We have friends who spent 5 days at DL and said it was definatley not too long.
This is our first time in the US, and the first time to any DL park anywhere and I am sure we couldn't see it all in 2 days! We have been to DreamWorld and MovieWorld in Australia (and I am sure they are smaller) and could easily have spent more time at those.
Staying at HoJo's will be be something like $1000 cheaper than Grand Cal. (that is alot of spending money when travelling with 5 people)
While I am sure GC is a superb place, we are going to experience the theme parks not sit in a hotel. (Mind you if money was no object I would love to stay at the DL Hotel!)
South CA city passes are avilable in the US to all, not just out of towners.
On their web site it says that they are available for many cities inc. SF, LA, NY,Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia etc.You can buy online or at the attractions concerned.
There you go rjw_lgb_ca, even all the way from Oz, I can give you some info!!!!
We are keen to see CA's beautiful country side, that is why we are driving ourselves from SD to SF (and alot in between) but when travelling with kids, you have to include stuff for them too, ie theme parks.
Thanks
Carin

Knott's has indeed added two more exciting coasters in the past few years: Xcelerator and Silver Bullet. www.knotts.com If you're not already suffering from theme park overload, there's plenty there for your kids to enjoy. (my kids, 12 & 10 like Knott's better than Disney, Universal & Six Flags)

Also, for those buying that city pass in the summer months, you may be able to use that Knott's day for Knott's Soak City, the water park next door.

Another tip for the Zoo, aquariums, museums, etc. With a family of 5 or more, it is usually more economical to buy an annual membership than pay the one-time individual admissions. Check out SanDiegozoo.org. We've also done this for the Aquarium of the Pacific, and other out-of-state organizations.

Enjoy!
