D.C. hotels, still deciding`
Hello again.
Still trying to decide on a hotel for my family for 6 nights in July.
I have a package possibility that includes the Renaissance Mayflower for a good price.
Anyone have any comments on this hotel for a family of 4, son 14, daughter 17? We want to be in walking distance of attractions if possible.
Thanks, Kathy

I can't comment on what the rooms are like at the Mayflower, but it's in a great location. It's few blocks from the White House, and within a block or two of both the red and orange/blue lines of the metro. It's downtown, so it's not exactly a charming neighborhood, but it's very central.

Since Marriott took over the Mayflower they have really spiffed it up quite a bit. Recently I was in a crunch, needed a room for one night during cherry blossom time and they accommodated me. It is a nice property and well located, so if you can get it for a good price I say go for it.

Thanks for the info.
Seamus,
Did it seem like the rooms would be large enough for a family of 4 to be comfortable for 6 nights? I realize that it is an old establishment and so wondered if the rooms would be kind of small.
I really like the "great location" part. Just wondered if it was close to any affordable restaurants. Any ideas?

I stayed at the Mayflower last weekend ($80 thru priceline). We had two rooms off on a little corridor on their own.
It's a very nice, classic hotel. Really nice lobby. Very nice rooms, but small (as is typical of older hotels), althought our room had a huge marble bathroom with double sinks.
Only thing that I would advise it parking somewhere other than using the hotel valets (they are very nice, but parking is like $30 per day).
It's in a good location, 4 blocks from the Whitehouse, 6 or 7 from the mall. Easy walk to Dupont Circle for dinner.

The Mayflower is close to many affordable restaurants. The hotel restaurant is not one of them!
There is a small food court underground at Conn. Ave. & L st. at the Farragut North Metro station (1/2 block away).
There are many chain sandwich shops within a few blocks of the Hotel as well (Cosi', Corner Baskery, Potbelly, Au Bon Pain, etc.) for breakfast or lunch.
The best concentration of restaurants close to the Mayflower is on 19th st. between L st. and P st. but really you can find inexpensive places everywhere in the area.
The best breakfast (and a bargain) is the The Luna Grille on Conn. Ave just above N. St. - about 2 blocks. Also good for lunch or dinner.
The best nearby inexpensive lunch is CF Folks on 19th st. between Jefferson st. and N. st. (4 short blocks). Open Mon-Fri. lunch only. Great sandwiches but even better are the daily specials. Get some of the daily specials , including dessert. Check the daily specials page every day for a week to get an idea. http://www.cffolksrestaurant.com/DailySpecials.htm
If your find yourself around the White House any time close to breakfast or lunch time you must try the Breadline - a DC institution. Fantastic pastries, sandwiches, pizza, soups, and salads. Treat yourself to some great inexpensives wines or espresso drinks there as well. Closed Sunday - breakfast/lunch only. 1750 Penn Ave. NW

Kathy, the room I had was actually one of the accessible ones, and it was quite spacious for one or two, had a large marble bath and a foyer with a double closet. Previously, though, the rooms I had were not as large. Honestly, I'm not sure many hotel rooms other than a suite would be comfortable for 4 people for 6 nights! You may want to check out the Barcelo on P Street near Dupont Circle - their rooms are quite large. Alternatively, you may even consider looking for connecting rooms at a lower priced property. Also check out the State Plaza hotel at 21st and E NW - less wonderful but still OK location, and they have suites with kitchenettes. www.stateplaza.com, though sometimes even better rates are available at www.quikbook.com
