cooperstown - hall of fame
We will be traveling to Cooperstown NY to see the Hall of Fame in May. Any suggestions/hints on where to stay/not to stay? We will be traveling with 2 teen boys and celebrating a big bithday for my husband. We have never been there so any info on accomodations or area would be welcome.

Rooms are really tight here in the summer, but you ought to be okay in May. There are motels south of town, in town it is almost all guest houses plus the Otesaga Inn -- gorgeous, in a beautiful area, but expensive. I've always stayed in one of the guest houses, but I bet the boys would prefer a hotel. Google!
Just outside town, there is a really good farm, history, and art museum which makes a nice break from baseball ;-)

What a great idea! I taught in Syracuse and was a guest faculty member often at Colgate - my faculty "buddy" was a die-heart baseball fan and it wore off - we stopped in C-town weekly!
If your husband is a big baseball fan, and you want to make his birthday special, you may consider googling the Phinney House - they offer great packages that include things like
ersonalized membership cards to the Hall of Fame, time with the Hall of Fame curators/staff seeing artifacts not always on display.
The Otesaga Resort is lovely, wonderful service, respectful old resport, however as a family, a bed and breakfast closer to the center of town will be more "fun" with the kids -- save the resort for a romantic get-a-way. (IMHO)
The Inn at Cooperstown - you would have to check to see if children are allowed, AND CHECK to see the Inn has air conditioning -- the staff: warm and have always had great ideas and advice - can make special arrangements to really make your husband's birthday special -
The Landmark Inn has received very positive reviews (64 Chestnut Street - (607)547-7225 )
The benefit of a bed and breakfast in town - the Inn Keepers tend to love the village and baseball - have great stores (fact or faction will keep the boys talking for years) you will not be paying extra for breakfast and the boys will be well fueled for a hot-dog (tradional baseball lunch) you won't have to worry about where to park during the day in a very congested town -- the boys and walk around town safely without the folks if you want to rest ... it makes for a relaxing and fun respite/celebration!

We stayed at the Inn at Cooperstown a few years ago and really liked it--excellent location. http://www.innatcooperstown.com/
The Otesaga looked really swell, too, and as I recall it offers things like canoeing and other activities your kids might like. It isn't walking distance to "downtown", but it's a short drive.
Tough choice! But I think you'll love Cooperstown--enjoy your trip!

In the summer, Cooperstown also hosts the opera festival at Glimmerglass. It is a hoot when the same guesthouse is half full of baseball fans and half full of opera fans!
My wife and I had a room in a guesthouse that overlooked the baseball stadium, completely wasted on us because we were in the opera fan group.
Our hostess and her husband bought a second B&B; she was going to run that one, targeting opera fans, he was going to take over the one with baseball views for that group!
Sorry, I don't remember the name of the place, but you will be there well before the opera season.
