Coney Island
I've always heard about Coney Island and always wanted to go. I've always thought of it as a historical landmark. From reading a couple of previous posts, it seems that it is under construction, or not safe or not worth the trip. My boyfriend lives in Manhattan, so it would be just a "short" trip on the subway for us (we're mid 20's by the way). Is it worth the time or is it even open? If it is worth the trip, what are some things we must do? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated, I am clueless!!

We are going to Coney Island this weekend. I was also there in May. The amusement park is open & the boardwalk is great. There is, of course, the beach & a very fine Aquarium. Nathan's for hot dogs and Keyspan Park (the Brooklyn Cyclones) if you like baseball. The subway station was refurbished & it looks nice (ie not scary). There are other attractions as well:

Hi, YES it is definitely worth it! Some developers bought most of it and some of it is gone, but there's still a lot left. What's there? Cyclone roller coaster, wonder wheel, lots of games and junk food and other rides. The beach! the boardwalk! Lola Starr's roller rink (for adults). Keyspan park where a minor league baseball team plays. Nathans! The first and best one.
As far as it being safe --- please... It is where brooklyn goes for an amusement park. and while that may have a bit of a seedy result, the people are all there to have fun and enjoy themselves. I wouldn't leave my wallet in full view, but I wouldn't be paranoid or afraid either.
Depending on where you are in Manhattan, that short trip would be about 50 minutes from midtown, coney island is all the way down brooklyn.

Aquarium takes around 2-3 hours so if you head out early enough, you should be able to do it. I enjoyed the aquarium last year. Its the only one with walruses that I know of. I agree that it is a long ride on the subway. 50 minutes from Grand Central or Penn Station (can't remember which one)

The aquarium is just OK - there are much better elsewhere.
Some of the rides have been shut permanently but there is now some sort fo little circus ting there. there is a boardwalk and a beach (mobbed and not recomemneded). Also Nathan's hot dogs and fries. the trip is about an hour on the subway (end of the line) and the area is not very pleasant.
I wouldn;t bother - but if you have nothing better to do?
