CoCo Palms Resort in Kauai

Can anyone tell me what happened to the CoCo Palms Resort in Kauai? I know it was heavily damaged by the hurricane in the early 90s, but thought it was going to reopen in 1995. I was hoping to stay there again, but can't find it.

It's still sitting there - in ruins. It was a sad sight on our December trip. I read that the property may now bw in the hands of a developer - anyone have any info?

We were there in July 2002. Saw it in ruins. Heard it was for sale at that point....not sure what the status is.

Oh my god - we stayed there in 1976! Unbeatable accomodations ... the small cottages w/outdoor showers. I'm so sad to hear about the damage!

As of this morning's Garden Island newspaper, the new(est) owner has grand plans -- but he's owner #4 or #5 since `Iniki, so we're in a wait-n-see mode.

The problem? Kaua`i County wants to ease traffic congestion, and the Coco Palms has to lose some property for that to happen -- either in front, or in back...but the County can't seem to decide which way the new road will go. This has been "in discussion" since 1992 (sigh....).

That's why every potential Coco Palms owner/redeveloper has walked away from negotiations. Here's hoping this new fellow actually makes something happen!

For all you CoCo Palms lovers, there's good news about the coming restoration plans (you'll have to cut and paste):

There is a new website -- created, apparently by the new owners -- with up to date info about the hotel:
http://www.cocopalms.com/

Drove by the place on Monday -- no sign of any renovations yet, but we're hopeful! One of the more interesting developments is that there will be an elevated pedestrian walkway built to allow folks to safely traverse the hotel-to-beach route over the highway...with (last I heard) _elevators_ on each side of the overpass. Kewl!

Mahalo plenty for the other website auntiemaria!! I remember reading that they were going to try to dupicate the original lobby building, but from the appearence of the drawings, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Regardless, it will be nice to have it back. =D>
