Atlantic City is 2.5 hours from NYC. There are many buses that go there (NJ Transit, Academy Bus Lines, among others) which makes it an easy day trip. Some of the bus lines give you a voucher for $15 (?) worth of gambling chips, which makes it a cheap trip too...since tolls, gas & parking can really add up, it's worth it to take the bus rather than drive if you're going alone.
I have never been to the Indian properties (Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods), but I believe they are roughly the same distance away as A.C.

The Connecticut casinos or Atlantic City are both doable for the day. Atlantic City is a little further, but if you go on a weekend you will have to deal with New Jersey shore traffic. I personally prefer Atlantic City. Many more casinos, a lot bigger.

I also suggest taking one of the busses unless you drive down during a weekday. Jersey shore traffic was horrendous last time I drove to A.C. during the day. THe most recent bus trip cost $20 but they give it back to you in vouchers for the casinos.
Foxwoos is 2.5 - 3 hours from NYC depending on where you leave from and when, in the direction of Mystic, CT.
I think there is also a gambling night-cruise that leaves from Sheapshead Bay, Brooklyn. Anyone ever go on it? I haven't.

I'd reccommend AC beacause at Mohegan or Foxwoods, there is no competition so the table minimums are a lot higher. On weekends, I've found it hard to get on a BJ table <$25, even on early part of weeknights. In AC, there are many competitors within walking distance so it tends to be more consumer friendly. I've never had trouble hopping on a $10 table though I haven't been to AC in 2 years.
