Circus Circus - How Bad Is It?

I just found out my husband won a trip to Las Vegas to play in a pool tournament that's being held at the Riviera. I was reading mixed but mostly positive reviews about the Riviera and wasn't too worried about staying there. But today I found out the rooms reserved for us are across the street at Circus Circus. I have yet to find one positive review of Circus Circus and don't especially want to go now, just based on the reviews.

I called the Riviera and they're completely booked, of course.

So what I need to know is, does anybody have recent experience at Circus Circus to either convince me that I'm nuts for worrying about it, or to convince me I should get a room somewhere else, even if we have to walk 2 miles in 110 degree heat? I don't mind paying out of pocket for another room, within reason, but of course I'd rather not if I don't really have to.

Any thoughts?

I think you will be much happier with your time in Vegas if you pick a hotel that gets consistently good reviews-------NOT Circus Circus.

I probably should be more specific. We don't care about whether it's fancy or how good the food or casino are. I expect we'll only be sleeping there so my real concerns are how is it for cleanliness and comfort and safety? We're in the West Tower, if that matters, and the website says it's been remodeled although I don't know when.

Does anybody have recent experience they can comment on?

Thanks!

I would not stay at Circus Circus. The owners of the casino haven't put any money into maintaining it for years, as their plan is to milk it for any revenue that's left and then tear it down. As a result, everything in the casino is worn and tattered and there's a strange odor that permeates the building.
If money isn't an object, I would stay at Encore. It's close to Circus Circus and extremely nice and safe. To save some money on your stay, you can use promo code MJJASV when you book (it will unlock $119 rates with $50 of Resort Credit). This link has more info on this promo and other Encore deals: http://www.vegaspromoguide.com/?p=160

Not sure if Sara Anne is an "objective" responder, i.e. she seems to be an advertiser, but I often use the Cheapo Vegas strip map as a point of departure when looking for bargains in Vegas, b/c you can access each of the resort websites from the map instead of having to type them in individually.

Circus Circus is not a desirable place to stay and I have seen other posters say that it is not safe. With all the bargains currently being offered in LV, I think you can find something better w/o going broke. Good luck.

PS, just for the heck of it, I checked some rates on the Planet Hollywood site, picked randomly b/c of its good central location and they are offering bed and breakfast special rates for as low s $79. Of course those are on some weekdays, not sure when you are going, but I use that only to show that there are bargains to be found!
