wow, although I don't care for cigarette smoke, I've never let it deter me from some memorable trips to Vegas. I've had reunions with longtime friends,toured the desert and surrounding area by myself and had wonderful relaxing days by the pool, bought some very different items from the stuff I find in Alaska, not overly indulged in poison(alcohol), walked the equivalent of 11 miles on the strip(in comfy athletic shoes with pals so we could enjoy our dinners), not ever thought about soliciting a "male escort"(I have someone much more skilled at home, and 22 years worth,lol)...
but that's just my opinion, and yes, I will return. J.

They had a non-smoking hotel casino in Reno several years ago..it went broke. I have heard, and I can't speak for all the casinos, but many of them do not allow smoking in their poker room...so learn a new game...and as has been mentioned, casinos don't always attract the greatest of people although, with the ticket in ticket out slots now, you'll see fewer street people grazing for lost change because no money goes in or out of the machines..but, I think it will be a long time before you see a non-smoking casino, if ever. Some of them do have certain banks of slot machines that are no smoking and also some of the tables, but there will be smoking all around you. I don't know about any of the Indian Casinos, have never been to one. If smoke really bothers you badly, then Las Vegas is not for you, at least in the Casino parts.

Smoking and casino gambling go together naturally. They both appeal to people who ignore odds.

You know what's really irritating? Smokers in the restaurants. I've traveled to Vegas with a smoker in our group before and it's absolutely amazing how even SMOKERS want a non-smoking room. Ironic isn't it? This one lady wanted a non-smoking room, but then proceeded to smoke while on the toilet. WTF? I just shook my head. Then, when we went to eat at a buffet, what does the smoker want? A NON-smoking table. Again, so she doesn't have to smell anyone else's bad habit, but as soon as she was done, she wanted to light up. What gives? Go take a freakin' walk 20 feet away if you need to get that nicotine on your tongue right after a meal. People like these are the reason why hotel rooms, even designated "non smoking" still smell like smoke.

As for newer hotels vs. older - I agree with the others. The Wynn Hotel was absolutely fabulous! I stayed there in May and I swear to goodness, when I came home, I never smelled any smoke on my clothes or luggage. The rooms have windows to let in fresh air even constantly and can't be closed completely, so that really helped. It was great! Gambling in the Wynn was also nice with lots of non-smoking tables. Usually, if you have several people willing to ask the pit boss to put a no smoking sign, it will happen. Just ask.

We spent a couplo of nights at the Venetian a couple of years ago and I was amazed at how little the smoke bothered me . . they had toms of non-smiking rooms and the Casino was very well ventilated.

Hey guys, I was born and raised in Las Vegas (hence the...vegasnative) and guess what....I don't smoke and never have!!!! Anyway, the smoke can be pretty gross. Have any of you ever been to any of our local convenience stores, i.e., 7-11's? Slot machines are allowed in them and so is smoking. Probably my worst pet peeve about my hometown. When my DH runs in to get him a Big Gulp (and it is only a minute or two) I ask him how his pack of cigarrettes was because he stinks after only a few minutes in there. Anyway, monique54 I have seen the dueling pianos at NY, NY and it is a MUST SEE, very fun!!!! I hope you have fun.

Recalled from years ago that at least one casino in Laughlin, NV was smoke-free, and after checking it out online, still appears to be the case at Harrah's Laughlin. Here is a link for other (albeit scanty) smoke free info in Vegas:

I also am bothered by the smoke in the casinos and have not found the state of the art ventilation systems to be so wonderful. However, I have noticed that it seems that when we go in winter, it is noticeably less smokey than summer. My theory for this is that they are able to take more of the cool fresh winter air into the casinos, whereas in summer, the cooled air probably has to recirculate more often, b/c it is so hot outside, and the more of that hot air they take in, the higher their cooling costs will be....Any engineers out there who can tell me if this is accurate??

Do you all worry about walking around and inhaling bus fumes, etc? I like the person who likes to live and let live! We all have to die (of something) sometime so why not chill out some? I'm a non-smoker but I have had it with you all!

I really think it depends on the time of day. All the newer casinos DO pump in a "themed" fragrance - TI, the Mirage, Mandalay Bay smell tropical, like coconut, the Bellagio smells like flowers, the Luxor has a spicy smell, etc... This is most noticeable earlier in the day. I don't know if that's because the casinos tend to empty out in the wee hours of the morning and the air circulates better, but it does smell pretty good in there until later in the day. However, having said that, I never leave the casinos smelling like that fragrance, and I always leave smelling like smoke!

I hate cigarette smoke, but it's not something I really notice until AFTER I leave the casino. As other posters have said, the cigarette smoke is definitely not a reason to ruin your trip! Certain sections are smokier than other - i.e. the slot areas (what IS the correlation between slots and smokers?!?!).

As for the dueling pianos at NYNY, definitely go. If you don't want to go into the bar itself for fear of smoke, you can sit just outside the "windows" at the bar, watch all the action, but not sit "in" the bar. In my experience, the best performers are usually on from early evening until about midnight.

I would tend to believe that people walking through the casinos assist in circulation, and that the fragrance has a better chance of landing on the carpet --- instead of peoples' clothes --- when the casino is sparsely populated.

We hear about people being allergic to people's perfumes, colognes etc. So I am wondering if some people have a problem with theme fragrances being pumped into the casinos.

i've noticed this in mandalay bay. seems to have a coconutty smell like suntan oil. i guess supposed to give you that south seas feeling. it kind of starts to make you feel sick

fehgeddaboudit: I should have worded that better... When the casino is busier and there are more people, there's also a lot more smoke, and it tends to overwhelm the good smell... I noticed that earlier in the day, the fragrance smell is stronger, and I figure that's because the smoke has cleared for a little while. Although it's possible they have the fragrance on some sort of cycle... I just know it's stronger during the day, and I WISH that smell would linger in my clothes and hair, rather than the smoke!
