cigarette smoke in Las Vegas
 

Can anyone tell me if smoking is allowed in the casinos? What about in restaurants-is there a no smoking section or is smoking banned? Thanks

I'm going to assume this is not a troll question .. Smoking is allowed in all casinos and some (the older ones) stink badly of smoke. There are non-smoking sections in every resturant I've been to in 'Vegas (and we go about 3-4 times a year. Hotels all have non-smoking floors too, but be aware that non-smoking rooms are NOT guaranteed, they are just requested when you book a reservation.

If you stick with the newer casinos/hotels the air circulation is much better in the casinos but smoke is still in the air just the same. If you want to gamble you might want to look for a slot machine or table near a main door to the hotel (door from the outside). The doors are continually being opened as people pass through and the "fresh air" comes in too. I've found that this works for me :-)

I am allergic to cigarette smoke, and so I was concerned about the smoke in the casinos, too.

What I found was that in the newest, large casinos the smoke was not ever a problem. We stayed at the MGM and spent most of our casino time there, and I never smelled smoke, not even when the people near me were smoking.

When we went downtown and went in some of the older casinos, I had to leave because the smoke was burning my eyes and throat.

So to answer your casino question, if you stay in the newer casinos, I don't think it will be a problem for you.

Ditto, although if someone sits right next to you and lights up, it can be irritating, even in the newer places.

cigarette smoke and cigarette stench is a deal breaker for me. I will not stay in a hotel room which has the stench of cigarettes. I will go to a casino or bar but I do not stay as long because of the smoke. Just can't stand it.

The newer hotels have state of the art ventilation systems.

jorr, that must be a deal breaker for you in Vegas because out there it seems everyone smokes!

I don't think everyone in Vegas smokes. But I stand on what I said. A state-of-the-art ventilation system might be promoted but rooms can still stink of cigarette smoke.

yeah, they sure do. I almost expect to see free lung x-rays in the lobbies.
And this is coming from someone who lost her dear dad to lung cancer, though he'd quit many years prior to his passing.
It is difficult for me, because I am a "live and let live" soul, but I think about what the families of smokers may someday face, as I did.

Thanks for your replies. Lori, I don't even know what a troll question means, but I am a non smoker and where I live we have very stringent smoking bans just about everywhere, including bars. I'm hoping it won't be too bad in Las Vegas, but it certainly sounds like there will be some pretty smoky situations.

I am staying at the MGM Grand, so I hope it won't be too bad. Have any of you been to NYNY for the duelling pianos? I wanted to go there, but if there is a lot of smoking, I probably won't be able to stay for long.

Just recently we went to Atlantic City - never been before. We were there for about an hour. Don't let anyone convince you that hotels and their casino are so well ventilated that you will not smell the smoke - not true.

Now if someone would open a smoke-free casino, I would have a blast. :D

There is no casino in Atlantic City that can compare with the newer hotels on the Las Vegas strip.

I've been in a Vegas casino, playing slots, with a guy smoking a cigar 5 machines away, and I couldn't smell the cigar's smoke.

They do keep a fantastic ventilation system.

I hate to disagree w/ Jean but the smoking in Vegas is horrible! While the newer hotels do a better job, spend more than 10-15 minutes in any of them and you will walk out smelling like an ash-tray (no joke). I wish they would ban smoking at the tables (BJ, craps, etc).

Non-smoking tables are an option in most any casino. I will always seek them out and I find that the earlier I arrive in the evening, the better my opportunity to find them. My experience has been that the as the non-smokers vacate later in the evening the tables are no longer designated as such and become fewer and further between. As long as a single non-smoker remains at a table, the "Grandfather Clause" remains in effect. If you have a large enough bankroll, hold your ground! Granted, the newer casinos are a lot more tolerable.

I thought the MGM was terrible. My clothes smelled of smoke after just 2 hours of blackjack. Note, however, I am from Delaware and we're smoke free. Consequently, I'm a little more sensitive than most people who may not be fortunate enough to experience 100% smoke-free environments. Thank You Gov. Minner!

Monique: As others have mentioned, ventilation systems in newer casinos are excellent, and you can find non-smoking tables in most casinos.

But I get a kick out of people who ask about smoking policies in casinos.. You know, hoardes of people flushing their money down toilets, consuming a narcotic (alcohol), and picking up prostitutes on the street generally aren't bothered by a little cigarette smoke. And a no smoking policy doesn't make a dent in the overwhelming pall of evil that hangs over the entire city of Las Vegas. Just my opinion.

I was amazed when we walked through the casino floor of the Venetian this summer. I've never seen such a state-of-the-art ventilation system. Not only did I NOT smell ANY cigarette smoke, but the air was also slightly perfumed!! Seriously! My friend commented, "It smells NICE in here!"

I agree about the Venetian ventilation. NYNY, however new, I couldn't stay in, it was just too much smoke. The Luxor also bothered me, but Mandalay Bay was ok.

Avoid the Tropicana and Excalibur casinos as they have terrible ventilation. The only casino I didn't smell smoke in was the Bellagio which always smells of flowers to me. I am very sensitive to smoke and I get really bad sore throats from it in Vegas.

I quit smoking three years ago and am quite aware of the smoking going on around me. My husband still smokes, so I am not militant about it, but I'm amazed that smoking is still allowed in the casinos. Monique54, if you are sensitive to smoke and are looking for it, you will not be happy in Las Vegas. You just can't get away from it.
