Las Vegas Smoking Ban

We're going to Vegas for New Year and two of our party are smokers. We're aware of the recent legislation and were wondering how it operates with respect to hotel/casino bars. I understand that nowhere that sells food will allow smoking, but does that cover all the bars one finds scattered about the casino floor? We're actually staying at the Mandalay Bay, so if anyone has any specific information about that, I'd be grateful. Hanging about in strip clubs so you can have a beer and a cigarette at the same time would seem a little extreme.

IF the smokers in your party have any manners at all, they'll step outside to poison the air with carcinogens.

Should they be so rude as to selfishly insist to poison their "friends," here's some helpful information:

Hi Graham
I am ashamed to confess that both myself and husband are smokers - however, I do agree with Gekko here. We certainly don't smoke in our own home or others' homes or in hotel rooms (I always book non-smoking rooms - the smell is awful in smokers!) BUT, we are spending one night in Vegas next June, and I hadn't been aware that there was now a total smoking ban - I'm pretty sure I was offered smoking rooms by several hotels, when I was looking around.
But, yes, ask them to go outside to smoke ...

I was just in Vegas in September. My 7th trip and I will not be going back unless I get dragged there for business. I don't know what smoking ban you are talking about because the smoke was so bad I could not breathe. Everybody was lighting up all over the place, except the restaurants. The casinos are just disgusting. And even the ones with so called ventilation, are just as bad--only you can't smell it. But, just wait a day or two and then try to figure out why your throat is killing you and your sinuses are completely blocked and your food is all tasteless. That is why I will not be returning to vegas any time soon.

The ban does not include casinos, unfortunately. All the answers are right here:

It's easy to quit smoking, I have done it many times!
It's ridiculous to be able to smoke anywhere as has been the case in Nevada for so long.
Here in California, it is not permissable just about everywhere and it's a law for the betterment of the larger society, I remember when you could smoke anywhere in Cal. Hard to believe.
I don't smoke in my house as it is a filthy dirty habit for weak minded people.
There will however, never be a day when they will tell me I can't.

MB is one of the less smokey casinos, good air filtering system. However most of the time I am there I end up smelling the magic herb!

Casino restaurants do have to be non-smoking that don't have bars. It is very hard to heep a person from smoking where they used to without problems and generally speaking people still smoke in bars where food is served off strip. Is it as bad as it used to be- I don't think so but the environment will not be smoke free. There is a big debate how to enforce the law as some local bars have banners that say "smoker friendly". Supposedly smokers caught smoking where they shouldn't will be fined $100 but how much in city funds will be spent on chasing rogue smokers? Will there be undercover agents? It sounds funny but that's the fix we are in right now.

Thanks, guys. Personally, I never found any of the casinos we visited to be particularly smoky previously but it seems to be the way the world is going... even France!

The key is to discourage younger people from taking up smoking in the first place. I suggest targeting younger ones for enforcement of the law.

Then, as the smokers die off, out nation will eventually be smoke-free.

Hi Graham,

I was in LV in June, and stayed at the Mandalay Bay. Here is the story:

The law - no smoking in public places and workplaces, except for gaming floors in casinos, and bars that do not have a food license. If a bar has a food license, then it has to be 100% smokefree.

That being said, Rum Jungle in Mandalay Bay has a food license, and serves food, yet MB decided that when they stop serving food around 11 pm, they allow smoking. Their food license still applies at those hours, regardless of what time of day it is (refrigeration of food, cleanliness of kitchen, etc. are a 24/hour a day requirement), yet they allow smoking - go figure.

The Mirage, which has the same owners as MB, has a restaurant called Japonais, which is a chain. I believe that Japonais has restaurants in NYC, California and Chicago, all of which are 100% smokefree by law. Their branch in LV is supposed to be 100% smokefree b/c they hold a food license, but they not only allow smoking, but supply the ashtrays and matches. I asked them why they do this, and their response was basically that they didn't care that they were breaking the law, and said to call the health department on them.

A steakhouse in the Mandalay Bay shopping mall has problems with smokers lighting up inside. I was there when a group of ten at dinner, just lit up. I had to ask management to ask them to stop smoking; management did not go over on their own and ask them, prior to my request. I asked management if this happens alot, and the response was that it is frequent.

After going inside many of the casino hotels in on this trip, smoking took place in the lobbies, walkways, etc., all of which are supposed to be smokefree. Especially at the casinos, 'no smoking' signs are minimal and poorly placed, so that smokers may miss the signs and not even know that smoking is not permitted.

Even the fancy Caesars Forum shopping mall has a cigar shop where smoking is allowed outside of the shop in the interior of the mall, by the escalators, so the smoke wafts throughout the mall area, even though the walkway is supposed to be smokefree. In fact, the clothing stores next door complained about the smoke coming into their stores and smelling up their clothing.

Even the Westin advertises that their hotels in the USA are all 100% smokefree, but their Las Vegas hotel has a casino in the lobby that is all smoking-permitted.

The upscale non-casino restaurants that I visited were in compliance, and 100% smokefree, including their bars.

Hope this eyewitness report helps.

Thanks, Kiki. From what I can tell, after restaurant hours rumjungle becomes a nightclub, so then smoking is allowed. You'd have thought people would want to keep their breath for dancing, but there you go.
If it comes down to it, I'll tell my chums just to go and play the slots, then they can smoke and get free beer. "Result", as we say here in the UK.
Hope you liked Mandalay Bay, we stayed there a few years ago and are looking forward to going back.
