China town & Little Italy subway question

I'm taking my miece & nephew to NYC for the day to see Times Square and such. If we have time they'd like to see China Town and Little Italy.

It's been a while but it seems to me that we can easily take the subway. Can anyone please tell me how?

All advice is welcome: Which station should we get on, what stop (Canal?) and which direction is Little Italy?

Thanks so much!

From Times Square, take the N or the R train to Canal Street, which is the main drag in Chinatown.

You'll walk east towards Mulberry Street, which is Little Italy.

Turn left (north) from Canal on to Mulberry.

While Canal Street is a "main drag" of Chinatown, try Mott St or Mulberry St SOUTH of Canal for the smaller shops and restaurants that most people would associate with Chinatown.

If you're travelling to or from Times Sq to Canal/Chinatown, take the N or R as Gekkp suggests. In the event you are somewhere on the East side (possibly Grand Central), than the 6.

MFNYC is correct. From Times Square, it would be silly to consider the 6 train.

One would need to take the shuttle to Grand Central and then transfer to the 6.

And I agree that the best part of Chinatown is the Mott Street area south of Canal.

I did use the word alterantive, the 6 can be helpful if they veer ever so slightly to the east side.

By the way, if you are in Chinatown a real treat is the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory where they make there own. Besides what they call the "exotics" such as chocolate and vanilla, they make green tea and my favorite almond cookie ice cream. It is on Bayard Street between Mott and Elizabeth (and closer to the Canal Street 6 stop.)

Thank you all so much for your responses! Saved us a bunch of time. I know I come from a small town and all but I have been on many big city metros and NYC has the worse subway when I need to figure out which train to take.
