The 2 big move-in dates are May 1 and Oct 1. While the greatest amount of property is available, the competition can be fierce.

Yes, 30 days is the legal limit, but many landlords want to know earlier, and it isn't against the law to ask! I think it's pretty standard to ask 60 days out.

I can't advise April 1 vs May--I personally haven't had much leway with move dates so can't compare. Sorry.

If you can't come till April 3, there will still be some stuff, just the very best will be taken. The rental market here is pretty tight because of the condo boom--lots and lots of conversions means less rental stock. When we moved out of our place in the East Village last fall they raised the rent $300 a month!

Good luck--you may want to spend a day with someone like The Apartment People just because they can show you a lot of inventory in a short time--I personally have had mixed experience with them (one really good, one pretty bad), but they serve a purpose!

ashandjim2004--Great to hear about reasonable rents in the Lincoln Square area. Thanks for sharing!

Racy--We can come earlier, we just didn't want to come TOO early and miss listings that will be posted at a later date. Looking at the ChiReader and Craig's List over the past month, I don't see much, if any, listed more than 30 days prior to the move-in date. Maybe May is different since it's such a popular moving month?

Thanks again!
