Short term summer housing in Chicago
A young friend of mine, in her mid-twenties, is moving with a friend to Chicago to start her life, living away from her parents for the first time. The girls have saved some money and are planning to go at the beginning of June. They are going to move and then look for an apartment and jobs.
They need a place to stay for a few weeks, while they look for jobs and more permanent housing. It has to be cheap. The best they have found is summer housing at one of the colleges, for $250 per week each.
Does anyone have any suggestions for them, housing or otherwise?
I am thrilled for her and would love for her to have an easy transition. Thanks!

Good luck to your friend - my 21 year old daughter is doing the same thing in DC this summer.
The price they got - $2000/month - seems very high since in most cities that would rent a nice apartment. Any city that has college students will also have students looking to sublet their apartment for the summer, since student leases are usually for 12 months. I would try Craigslist and both look for and post need for sublet as well as contacting various colleges/universities to see if there is some way to get tapped into their off-campus or student posting site.

My wife and I like the HI Hostel on Congress. The upper floors are used as dorms for DePaul. There are laundry facilities and community kitchens in the building. http://www.hichicago.org/

Finding a sublease on Craigs list is how most of the new arrivals seem to find an apartment. My daughter did this when she interned during the summers when she was in college. Made me crazy.
Most of the students/young adults don't sublease the entire apartment, they sublease a room and live with strangers. I was beside myself when our daughter did this 2 different times. The first summer she subleased an apartment with a friend of a friend. It was in Evanston, she had a long commute on the train, but it worked. She actually got a grant from Ohio U to pay her rent.
Roommates who sign year leases also move out and sublease their rooms on Craigs list' so even if you rent an apartment with a friend, you could still possibly be living with strangers at one point. I just hated this.
