My husband and I want to get away for 4 - 5 days towards the end of June for our 20th anniversary. We were in Charleston 15 years ago and loved it, but haven't been back since. We were thinking about Savannah this time. Just want to stay in a nice hotel or B&B, relax, hit some nice beaches and, of course, have some great food. Should we chose Charleston or Savannah? Any...and all...suggestions on places to stay, restaurants, etc. would be appreciated. Thanks!

There are many posts on here re: this topic. I believe you will find Charleston to be an overwhelming favorite. Too me, there is more to do, better dining, better beaches & I just like the city itself better. Do a search you should find plenty of info.

I live an hour from Savannah and two from Charleston and will take the latter every time.

I recommend Savannah, not simply because I live here but because it's charming. I enjoyed a trip to Charleston for Spoleto a couple of years ago, and agree it's a standout, but Savannah's planned downtown, with beautifully landscaped squares off a tree and Spanish moss canopy for walking. The village-like feel in the downtown is so inviting for meeting nad greeting the gentlefolk, like the great Wilkes family at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, or the art students who work at cafes all over town. My guess is there is a flood of art galleries (I'd say maybe 60 or more) in the downtown area. Artisan food, Leopold's old fashion Ice Cream shop, Gelahtoooh! in City Market for a cool Italian treat, Harris Baking Co. on Drayton for fabulous breads, savory tarts, fist-size cookies, and the famous Harris family Regency Salad. Alligator Soul is a must try for dinner. Everything is at the white-table cloth restaurant is amazing, including the service. June through August there is music in the squares on Wednesday and Friday at lunchtime. It gives the feeling of yesteryears when folks were happy to greet and mingle. For me, Savannah offers the aura of simplier days, with its reserved sophisticated, tempered so not to be too showey. All those who manicure, clean up and restore play as role in Savannah always being ready for company.

Can you split your stay? Three nights in Charleston and two in Savannah?

Charleston is my favorite but both are simply lovely and should not be missed.

The drive on Highway 17 between the two cities is very beautiful especially through the ACE basin.

Good choice! We were there last month, and while we loved both, I prefer Charleston. Be sure to have dinner overlooking Shem Creek; that was beautiful.
