Charleston vs. Savannah for a Long Weekend with the Girls

The 5 of us can't decide between these two destinations. This will be a summer trip and the main criteria is that we stay at a resort with a spa. Beach would be nice, but not required. We're looking at 4 nights. Which has the most to do and see when we're not at the resort?

Charleston. So much more to do, and more interesting.

Art, storytelling, cuisine, history, 22 park squares, photogenic landscapes and city, and friendly people -- no competition! Savannah. Plus, Tybee Island beach is 20 minutes away.

I personally like Charleston more, but really I think either would work for this trip.

If you are really looking for a resort with a spa, then I don't think either is really suitable. You can certainly find a hotel with a spa in either city, but neither has what I'd consider resorts. I think you should be looking at Hilton Head.

Agree completely w/Doug_Stallings: Hilton Head is a beach resort (with spas, shopping, restaurants), while Charleston & Savannah are both cities -- pleasant enough cities, but not resorts.

SAVANNAH ... hands down!! You should plan on staying on or near Bay St. in the heart of it all. City Market and Riverstreet - you can walk to. Nightlife is fun and take a ghost tour...Several good Spa's in the area as well. Check out www.stayinsavannah.com for some suggestions!

It might not be in Charleston, but The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island is a resort with a spa on the beach with lots of activities, restaurants both on island and nearby and within driving distance to Charleston. The spa is wonderful!

Thanks to all. They both sound like good destinations. Perhaps one destination now, and the other another time!

My vote would also be for Savannah. It has been years since I was there, but it has it charms!! Charleston is also a great vacation destination... but I'd pick Savannah.

Charleston. It is much more walkable. I like the restaurants better. They also have Southwest airlines if you are flying.

That being said I'm going to Savannah this week.

I might pick Wild Dunes near Charleston for the spa/resort experience. Yes Kiawah it higher rated (and more expensive) but Wild Dunes is closer to Charleston so you can do the beach and historic downtown.
