I'm having an unusually difficult time finding lodging for a June trip to Charleston. I'm looking for a nice (4 star, maybe) hotel or B&B - but lots of the reviews on Trip Advisor are very "scary" for places under $200 per night! It seems the rates in this city are pretty high . (Ok, I do live in the very moderately priced MidWest, but I've travelled all over the US and in Europe!) Can any one make a suggestion??

Try the Meeting Street Inn - don't know what their rates for June are but have always been pleased with the rooms, etc.

You're right - it was GoTravel and not Scarlett (I found it by searching for Scarlett's posts, so she must have replied to it).

But apparently that's not enough info.

emt - I really doubt you'll find more suggestions for hotels, other than to use priceline for price. On tripadvisor you'll find review ranging from scary to glowing on just about any property, so you have to take them with a grain of salt when you read them. Beyond that, either spend the $$ or take your chances with a lesser property or priceline-type place. There are only so many hotels to choose from, right?

We enjoyed Jasmine House Inn during our brief stay in Charleston October. Our room was huge, decent continental breakfast, wine and cheese in the afternoon.

A 4* in Charleston is going to be expensive. Meeting Street INN is a good value. I think the Harborview Inn might be in the ballpark. We have stayed at the Hampton Inn which is out of the historic district but right across from the visitors' center so on the trolley line.

When are you planning to visit in June? If you're planning to be here anytime between May 26 - June 11, you will be hard pressed to find acceptable lodging under $200 as that is during the Spoleto USA Festival. It is a major city-wide event attracting people from all over the world so hotel rooms are at a premium as are their prices.

If you're planning to arrive after Spoleto, you should be able to find rooms below the $200 at some of the following:

Mills House
Elliott House Inn
Andrew Pinckney Inn
Holiday Inn Historic District
The Francis Marion Hotel
Kings Courtyard Inn

Keep in mind that with almost if not all downtown hotels you will have to pay for parking (generally averages $12-$15/night).

And probably before Spoleto (admittedly that would be May) are graduations from Citadel and College of Charleston. I think there is very little "off" time for Charleston. What an amazing phenomenon it has become. Joe Riley deserves a medal.

You cannot go wrong with the Holiday Inn Historic District.

I agree with Iambooth. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Historic District last year in April. Was a nice place, good breakfast, pleasant well-trained staff. It is within 3-4 block walk to lots of things. It does charge for parking.
