DH and I are considering a three night trip to SC in early Oct. I've read a bit about hotels, what to do, etc. We are looking for three star quality at reasonable rates. That would be $100-120 per night. Is this possible. Will take any suggestions, for things to do, places to eat, and, of course hotel recommendations. Thanks in advance.

I'm also looking at hotels/B&B's in Charleston over Columbus weekend and can tell you that I've had difficulty finding anything under $200/nt. You'll have to look into the Ashley River area - there is a Holiday Inn that I saw for around $120/nt and a Hampton Inn for around $130/nt. Check expedia.com to get a broad overview of what's available, then look at individual websites from there.

I think Columbus Day weekend will be higher. I am considering 10/1/05-10/04/05. I am looking at the Andrew Pinckney Inn. Found some positive reviews on aforementioned website. We would like to be in the historic district, so as not to have to rent a car. Thanks for the info, both of you. Annie

Have you checked out the Francis Marion Hotel which is in the historical district? Happy visits in Charleston to both of you, Charleston is such a beautiful place to visit.

The Andrew Pinckney Inn is very nice. We stayed there in April of this year. My only complaints were the amount of noise I could hear in my room (we were in one of the townhouse suites) and the fact that no matter what time we got to breakfast, they were out of milk or out of bowls or out of cups or out of spoons,etc, etc. They had a hard time keeping the area stocked for the volume of guests there at that time. However, it is a good value for the historic area, the rooms are clean and attractive, service was generally good, and the location is hard to beat. I would stay there again.

My favorite moderate hotel in the historic district is the Meeting Street Inn, and in fact, I am staying there Oct. 9-12 for $119 per night. It is on Meeting Street almost across from the Market. I can't compare the rooms to the Andrew Pinckney, because we had a suite at the A.P., but I've stayed at the Meeting Street Inn twice and both rooms were very attractive, with four poster beds and canopies, hardwood floors, Oriental rugs. The rooms were very clean and service was excellent.

You would be fine at either one of these locations, in my opinion.

We were very happy staying at the French Quarter Inn in Charleston. It's a small hotel, very clean, good location and lots of little treats during the day and evening.

I second Betsy's comments on the Meeting Street Inn - we stay there whenever we have the opportunity to visit Charleston - 6-7 times over the last several years and have never been disappointed. They offer an acceptable wine and cheese hour in the evening and a decent breakfast - which coupled with the atmospheric courtyard and lobby - definitely give the feel of being exactly where you are - Charleston.
