Charleston and Savannah in May
My husband and I will be visiting Savannah and Charleston, and the surrounding areas, for about two weeks next May. Any suggestions for how much time to spend in each city, areas to visit nearby (particularly on the water) and things we absolutely must do while we're there?

Hi jwpileggi,
My BFF joined me for a week's stay in Charleston in April, and we had the BEST time!
Charleston is a beautiful city and the people are so nice! I'd split your time and spend a week in each so you can take your time and really get to know the city.
Not knowing your interests make it kind of hard to suggest anything; but we went to an aircraft carrier and ate off those metal trays like they have in prison movies (or in the miliary) in the Mess Hall, with 40's music playing (this was a must do for my friend who comes from a Navy family, but I had fun too) did a ghost tour, visited with a friend of mine there and ate alot of great food!
Hope this is helpful!

I'm in Charleston. May is a beautiful time of year to visit.
It would help to know your interests in order to give you good recs. My must-dos might bore you witless. Do you want to stay at the beach or in town? Do you like water activities? Historical stuff?

Both cities are well covered on this forum, and a site search will yield good results.
I'm very thorough in my sightseeing and found two full days in Savannah and three full days in Charleston to be a good amount of time. If you're a methodically slow sight-seer, maybe a day extra for each will be needed.

With two weeks and either a car or willingness to use buses and/or trains, you could expand far afield into cities and areas such as Atlanta, Asheville (NC), Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Charleston (SC), Raleigh (NC), Hilton Head (SC), Myrtle Beach (SC), or some of the islands off the Georgia coast.

We're both very into food, antiques and generally exploring. We also really like being on the water (my husband in particular loves fishing), so we were thinking of spending a few days of the trip outside the cities exploring the islands.
