Savannah and Charleston?

Savannah and Charleston?
We are planning a vacation during April in either Savannah or Charleston, and are wondering if we should also consider visiting both cities. How different are they? Is there any experience that only one of them has to offer?

I've been to Savannah by itself - and then took a trip that was to Savannah and Charleston in the same week.
I think of Savannah as Charleston-lite. Although they are different cities and I would recommend going to both.
Savannah's historic district is fairly compact and (I think) easily done in about 1-2 days.
Charleston I think of as a much bigger town with a little more exploring opportunities - there's a couple of really nice plantations to take day trips to.
I think both cities would make for a nice weeklong vacation....

To me, the two have totally different feels. Charleston is bright and airy; Savannah is dark with all the trees in its square.
The city layouts are totally different. Architecture different.
Highly recommend going to both. They are definitely not the same.

I know this post is a bit old, but hope someone can help me out.
If you HAD to pick one, which would it be? I will be in Atlanta for a wedding and am planning on staying 3 nights there to see family.
I would like to tack on a 3 night stay somewhere at the end of the trip and am considering Savannah, Charleston or any other ideas given to me.
