We had a very nice stay at La Playa, it is a historic hotel with gorgeous grounds and a nice restaurant. There is a pool at La Playa which is nice, Pine Inn does not have a pool, it is located right in downtown Carmel and is close to the beach.
We found La Playa to be charming and quaint, the staff is friendly there, also. We had an oceanview king room which was small but very nicely appointed. Let me know if you further questions about La Playa. ***kim***

Agree about the beautiful grounds at the La Playa, one of the properties strong features. It is a short walk to the village, but on an incline and could be a bit difficult at night in the dark.
The Pine Inn is right in the village and also had a parking lot behind it the last time we stayed there, a very helpful feature in Carmel, since street parking can be hard to find at certain hours.

LaPlaya will be quieter and is closer to the beach. Pine Inn's restaurant, Il Fornaio, is better than LaPlaya's. LaPlaya's grounds are prettier. Both hotels have parking lots. Since the Pine Inn is located on Ocean, their parking is in a primo location for shopping.
