Carlsbad, Oceanside or Encinitas?

We have the chance to tag along on a business trip. My husband will have the car and be working in Carlsbad and my daughter and I will have a few days to play. I do not know anything about the area. Could someone please tell me about the towns and possibly suggest a place to stay? We would like to do some boogie boarding and it would be great to be able to walk to some shops or restaurants. We like vintage stores or interesting little local shops and ethnic or local restaurants. Our hotel budget is around $150/ a night.

Cedros avenue in Solana Beach is perfect for you and your daughter..great boogie boarding in Del Mar, Solana beach, Encintas and Carlsbad..all are gorgeous clean beaches.
Rancho Santa Fe where I live is a beautiful drive and have lunch at Mille Fleurs.
Coastal North County is one of the prettiest places ever.
La Jolla is really cool too.
Where are you staying in Carlsbad?
Boogie boarded there last weekend and it was awesome..super warm and super clean water..
Love Encinitas for funky shops too.try Priceline for 4-5* hotels in the area...La Costa Resort is cool if you get it under $200 a night.

It sounds as if you haven't decided which town to stay in. Carlsbad would be the best choice, IMO, with Del Mar a close second. Solana Beach and Encinitas don't have as many hotels.

Carlsbad is one of my favorite beach towns - nice beach, cute little town, lots of nice restaurants-

There are a couple of Best Westerns there - one is right on the beach, the other across the street from the beach - havent stayed at either although the one on the beach looks nice to me

The Carlsbad Inn is very nice and right on the beach.
Cedros Ave in Solona Beach (down the road from Carlsbad) is a super fun place to shop. My favorite restaurant is Zinc on Cedros Ave.

Thank you so much for all the great replies! I will look into Del Mar and Solana Beach. I did know to look there.

Our requirements have changed a bit. We are now taking our two little dogs. Also, our budget is more flexible because the site my husband is able to use through his work sometimes has better prices.

So far I have been considering the Best Western Encinitas and have found few places in Mission Beach and Mission Bay that accept dogs. How does Mission Beach/ Bay compare to the Encinitas/ Carlsbad area?

Thank you for all the terrific help!

Sparklegem if your dh is working in Carlsbad I do not recommend you stay in Mission Beach/Mission bay - the traffic can be a real drag...

I am not a huge fan of Mission Beach - and would prefer to stay in North County with what you have shared.

I think the four seasons lets you have little dogs don't they?

The Four Seasons would be fabulous, but on our booking service it is $325 and it is more then the company will pay.

I have investigate all our options and I have decided on the Best Western Encinitas, unless there are other recommendations...

Carlsbad is the highest-end of the cities in question, no doubt. I love staying there.

Oceanside isn't my cup of tea at all.

Encinitas-- ahh, the place I'd live if I could find a job there. So laid-back, such beautiful beaches. LOVE IT.

But for holiday, Carlsbad. More things to do, you know. And La Costa is a great resort.

Since you're already decided on the BW in Encinitas, all I can say is: Kick back, give in to the beach-town lifestyle. San Diego will be about 45 minutes or so to the south. Make sure you get to Balboa Park and the wonderful museums!

Bring your dogs to "Dog Beach" on the beach at Del Mar..dogs allowed off leash there!! Our two Shelties love it when we go there!! Its only a certain area so you might have to ask a local to explain how to get there (I am not good giving directions and I don't live there)..anyway, if brining the dogs..give them their time at the beach too!!
Have fun!!
