I have always been a fan of Fox Rent-a-Car <http://www.foxrentacar.com>.

I have used them several times in the past in Orange County and have found them to be reliable and exactly as advertised. You may not have heard a lot about them, but they keep their advertising costs down and pass on the savings to their customers. In short, they do a good job!

Check ALL the major rental companies, i.e. Hertz, Avis, Budget, Alamo, National, Dollar. I would not rent from some company that I'd never heard of (just in case there is problems). I think you may be visiting the US from abroad since you use the term "hire a car" whereas in the US we say "rent a car". If you belong too an Auto Club (AAA in the US for example) some companies give discounts. Also check to see if your airline offers car rental plans, some do.

Always rent in advance to get the best deals. Check the various general web sites, travelocituy, orbtiz etc as well as the company web sites.
And always look for affinities. For instance - Hertz gives discounts to AMEX members.
