Cape Cod/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard Itinerary - Need help
Hello everyone,
I am planning a 3-4 day trip to Cape Cod area (prob Wed - Sun) in late August.
My wife and I are traveling with our two year old and another couple.
We were thinking of staying on Cape Cod as a home base to be somewhat centrally located so we can conveniently explore the area. My understanding is that ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket take approx. 1 hour, so it seemed completely realistic to spend one day on each of the islands in addition to our time on Cape Cod (one or two days depending on how long we decide to stay).
Does this seem logical? Where on Cape Cod would you suggest? Basically, we want to relax on the beach, enjoy the scenery, check out some of the little towns and eat good food.
Any hotels/B&B's on the beach/bay that you recommend?
Appreciate all your help and welcome any comments/suggestions or questions if you need more information in order to help.
Thanks!

If you stay mid-Cape (Yarmouth and Yarmouthport, Barnstable, Hyannis, or Craigville) it is pretty easy to go to Nantucket for the day on the fast ferry Iyanough. You get off in the middle of town and can walk to shopping, restaurants, historic houses, the historical association museum, and Children's Beach to let the 2 year old run free. Or you can take a bus tour of the island. Or both.
Falmouth, where you park for the Vineyard ferry, is farther away down busy roads. The Vineyard has three major towns, Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven, and a number of smaller ones. It takes time to travel among them, and the parts of Vineyard Haven you see are not charming (nor is the first couple of blocks on Nantucket when you come off the ferry). Oak Bluffs has a great carousel and charming Victorian cottages. I would recommend saving the Vineyard for when your child is older.
Confession: I live on Nantucket so might be prejudiced.

Personally, I'm a fan of Nantucket (and I live in PA.) My personal feeling is that Martha's Vineyard is a collection of quaint New England villages. Indeed, excellent for what they are. That said, Nantucket has a different vibe--it's something special.
And four days, of course, is only going to give you a taste of that area....

Having lived in Nantucket for close to 30 yrs now, I would have to say that Nantucket is a do not miss kind of place. There are two ferry lines they Hyline and the Steamship Authority. For house rentals try www.jordanre.com
for bed and breakfasts spots and further info try www.nantucketchamber.org
