Canyonlands by Night
We're visiting Utah next month and are interested in doing the Canyonlands by Night boat trip which I understand is in Canyonlands National Park.
Has anyone done this trip - is it worth doing?

I have NOT done this and never plan to. It looks so cheesy. I have seen the boats going down the river. First it's not in Canyonlands National Park, but I guess technically it borders Arches National Park on the north side of the Colorado River...but you don't see any arches.
You are taken down the Colorado River east from Moab. They shine lights on the canyon walls. I think the walls look so much better during the daylight. If you drive out Hwy 128 from Moab for a short while, you will see the same area as the Canyonlands by Night boat trip.

My husband and I took a boat tour with this company a couple of years ago. We went during the day. It was basically just a jet boat tour on the Colorado ... it was August and it was hot and therefore great to be on the water with the wind and spray. It was interesting to see the rock formations from the river vantage point. All in all we enjoyed the experience.
I don't think I'd be too crazy about the nighttime version.

Oh darn! Since it was written up as a "Do not miss" I thought it would be good. Since we're skipping Lake Powell and the boat trip we were going to take there, I thought this might be a good substitute.
Guess not! Thanks for topping so I could see this!

If you really want to get out on a river, I think a partial day float trip on that same stretch of the Colorado would be a better option. I've done it, and it's not the most spectacular river trip I've ever taken, but it was nice enough. Utahtea is right, though-since the highway follows the river here you don't need to get in a boat to see this stretch.
I've camped along the river when these night boats came by and it was just awful-blaring music and narrative, spotlights, just cheesy through and through.
Don't worry, there are so many better things to see in S. Utah than Lake Powell and the night boat tour, you will have an amazing vacation without these things.

We've decided to stay at the Sorrel River Lodge while in the Moab area and they offer several float trips and boat trips from the lodge. Once we get there we can investigate further to see if they would be good or not.
Since the group I'm taking cannot hike (only leg-stretchers), we'll be sighting alot from the car. I thought a boat trip down the river or on Lake Powell would be a nice change.
Sooooo glad there were several posts warning against the Canyonlands by Night. Sounds like we would have been very disappointed. I shy away from "touristy" stuff as much as I can and I think this has TOURISTY written all over it.

You might consider Tag-a-Long Tours in MOAB. We took their boat tour into Canyonlands National Park (few companies are licensed to enter the park). It was beautiful, we saw fossilized palm trees, etc,, learned a lot of geologic history, and we stopped for a picnic lunch. Then we were met by air-conditioned 4-wheel drive vehicles which gave us an outstanding tour of the park (with numerous stops) and drove us back into town. I highly recommend it for your group. It was a good way for us to explore Canyonlands, because the park is so huge, we didn't know where to begin.
