Water Raftting in Southern Utah?

Where to go for easy water rafting or kaying among the red rocks in Southern Utah or northern AZ?

Is end of May a good time to do it?

Thanks

Hi J,

There are quite a few options. If you just want a day or 1/2 day, check out these companies:

navtec
western river expeditions
moki mac
tag a long
sherri griffith river

These go out of either Moab or Green River. Everything from tame 1/2 float trips to the Cataract Canyon.

We're doing a 1/2 day raft tour out of Moab with Canyon Tours in a couple of weeks.

There is rafting on the Green River, but that's near Green River, Utah and Vernal Utah which would be northern Utah. Near Moab, it's the Colorado River. Moab is more central Utah.

For southern Utah I know there is kaying on Lake Powell but there won't be any rapids. You can take a half day float trip on the Colorado River out of Page, AZ. This is calm water and they use a powered raft to take you 14 miles down the river from the Glen Canyon Dam. Very scenic! My pictures: http://www.utahtea.lithium.com/pages...2003/float.htm

Lots of Gren Rivers to choose from!

The Green River starts up in Wyoming and travels basically south to join up with the Colorado River in Canyonlands Natl Park. I got to see the confluence from the air and it was amazing to see the 2 different colors of water meet (muddy brown and green).

Green River, Wyoming is right on the UT/WY border in northeast Utah, near Flaming Gorge Dam. Some fun little short 2 hour rafting there below the dam.

Green River, UT is just a 40 minute drive from Moab, slightly northwest off I-70. Several whitewater companies operate out of Green River UT and from there do the Green River (Desolation Canyon) trip, Westwater Canyon, and Cataract Canyon.

Several companies in Moab do similar trips. There is an easy kayaking trip available out of Moab too.

Take sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat with strap and have fun!

Hi Dayle! Hope you don't mind me popping in but we'll be in moab again this summer (YAY!) and wondered about the 'easy' kayak trip you mentioned. Can you define 'easy'? We've been a few times but realize each is different, along with the outfitters. Can you give me more info, please?

Hi Ellen,

I don't know the name of the company that does it, but one of them offers a trip where they take you upriver a few miles. They use 2 man, inflatible kayaks, require lifevests, and give you some basic instruction. I have not done it myself, but lots of friends have. (They did tip over, but no harm done.)

The river above Moab (east) can have a strong current, but just very small little rapids. Just lots of fun on a hot day. If I remember correctly, they include a lunch stop too and it's about a 1/2 day trip.

If you drive east on the highway out of town along the river, you'll see lots of people doing it. All ages.
