Can't use Priceline--any good websites to find cheap hotels
Looking for a cheap hotel near JFK. Need to be positive there is free airport shuttle service from the hotel. this can't be guaranteed with Priceline. I've tried cheaptickets, orbitz, sidestep & travelocity. Are there any other sites you know of that consistently find good hotel rates.

FWIW, I looked up the Priceline hotels in JFK area (if you haven't heard, you can find out which hotels are PL hotels). There are 3 2* hotels listed:
Best Western Kennedy Airport
Hampton Inn
Holiday Inn Express
Both Hampton Inn & Holiday Inn's websites mentioned COMPLIMENTARY shuttle to/from JFK. BW has a shuttle, but doesn't mention if it is free or not. Successful bids for those 2* range around $50-$55 (plus Priceline fees).

No, I didn't know that you can find out which hotels are priceline hotels. How does one go about finding this info out? I'm much more incined to take this route if i can be sure that these hotels all offer shuttle service. I went to the home page of the Best Western and it does offer shuttle service.
Thanks for all the tips everyone.

Go to BiddingforTravel.com
It is not the most user-friendly website, but I have saved a lot of $ by checking it out before bidding on Priceline.
If you scroll down to the Hotels Forum, click on
New York Airports (JFK/LGA/EWR including adjacent bidding zones)
then click on the first thread:
NYC AREA AIRPORTS AND SURROUNDING ZONES HOTEL LIST
there you'll find the * levels for JFK and the hotels.
If you click on the hotel name, it will directly link you to the hotel's website.
If you decide to go ahead with bidding via Priceline, make sure you read EVERY WORD in the Hotel FAQ section on BFT.com before you place your actual bid.

I know hotwire has been mentioned, but I have to give another plug for it. We've used it with great success. In Sept. we'll be visiting our son in Tacoma and had gotten a AAA rate of $119 per night at the Sheraton. I then decided to "hotwire it" and got a 3 star hotel for $52 per night. Decided to go for it - it's the Sheraton!

A comment about knowing which hotels are priceline hotels -
You CANNOT know for certain. www.biddingfortravel.com and www.betterbidding.com are great sites. But, the information there is only as accurate as people provide. There could easily be another hotel that priceline uses that just has never been posted there. Also, priceline could suddenly add a new hotel tomorrow in that zone.
That said, as was mentioned previously, you may save enough on priceline to pay for a taxi if, by chance, your hotel does not offer a shuttle.

www.quikbook.com
They allow cancellation without penalty, unlike most hotel discount sites.

http://www.easyclicktravel.com is another but if you can arrange your needs through priceline or hotwire I believe you'll be better off.

I find that sometimes the best rates can be had by booking directly with the hotel Ask about special rates (AAA, etc.). Also check the hotel's websites for special offers. I have yet to deal with a hotel that has a rate that isn't lower than the ones found on hotels.com. You just have to look at the various sources and call the hotels directly and book whichever is best. I don;t hink there's any one place to get the best rate across the board.
