Camping Cabins at KOA

Has anyone stayed in one of the camping cabins or lodges that can be rented at certain KOA's? There are several in California and we are specifically interested in the metro San Diego, los angeles and san francisco area for a week long trip in mid august. Are they comfortable, clean? This is an attempt to find less expensive accomodations for my family of 6. They can be rented for between $60 - $100 depending on size. Thanks for your help.

I've stayed in a Kamper Kabin for 3 nights in Colorado. I think you need to look at the floor plan/dimensions for the locations you're looking at. The one I stayed in was about 12'X12'. It theoretically slept 4 (1 double bed + 1 bunk bed). I was by myself, and I can't imagine stuffing 4 people in that space.

The bed was not comfortable (thin mattress) so I wound up putting the mattresses from the bunk beds onto the double bed for more padding. You also have to bring your own sheets/blankets and pillows, so it is a bit of a pain if you're flying.

I'm not familiar with the KOA's in California, but I would guess they're similar to Colorado. Check the floorplans and go from there.

Thanks for the reply. We'd be bringing sleeping bags with us. I was afraid the mattresses wouldn't be good and it sounds like they aren't.

It has been a few years, but we stayed in KOA camping cabins several times near San Francisco. They were cabins that slept 4 people and were very clean. I don't particularly remember the mattresses so probably thought they were OK. The cabins weren't spacious but we were mostly using them as a place to put our heads at night so they were find for us. My kids loved staying in the little cabins and still ask to go back.

We stayed in the Kamping Kabins at the KOA near Shingletown, CA. They were great - nice and cozy, clean, reasonably comfortable. There isn't a lot of space as others have mentioned - basically enough room for a double bed, bunks, and a little room for stuff. Each site had a picnic table and a fire pit.

It rained and hailed on us the weekend we were there, but we were perfectly warm and comfortable. Of course having to use the central bath house was less than fun in the cold and rain, but such is life

On the subject of matresses - ours were standard camp-type matresses, about 5" thick, fairly hard, covered in waterproof tarp material. Not comfortable like my pillow top at home, but not terrible either.

thanks for the info! Was there room outside the cabin to pitch a small tent if the kids want to sleep outside?

I don't know if it matters if there's room for a tent or not. You'd have to check with the individual KOA's to see if they would allow that. My hunch is that they wouldn't - they'd rather have you pay for an extra tent site instead of putting it up next to a cabin.

I've stayed in Kamping Kabins and I think the original ones are all standard. Little Kabin with front porch with swing, double bed and 2 bunk beds, each with a mattress. Small desk/table in Kabin. Outside is the typical picnic table and electricity available. Some KK's have heat and electricity depending on the location.

Since I've stayed in them, I've learned there are 2 bedroom KK's as well as the lodges that come with bathrooms.

All we've kamped in have been very clean. Not the most comfortable mattress in the world - but a heck of a lot more comfortable than tent camping. Bring your own sleeping bags or linens.

Basically, you bring what you would need for tent camping - except the tent!
