Yeah...if you are going for a week or less, choose either Northern or Southern, California. If you are going for more than a week, you can do both. The trip between LA and SF is about 7 hours. If Yosemite is on your bucket list, stay in Northern Cali and plan on making the major detour to Yosemite.
Northern CA highlights (in my opinion)
-San Francisco: visit Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz, Golden Gate Park, and an abundance of museums and attractions
-Napa Valley/Sonoma if you are into wine
-Monterey/Carmel By the Sea: word class aquarium, wine, smaller town feel, scenic drives
Southern CA highlights (in my opinion)
-Los Angeles: Hollywood sign and walk of stars, Santa Monica beach, Universal Studios, The Getti and LACMA
Orange County: Disney, Newport Beach, better shopping
San Diego: Gaslamp district, Coronado, San Diego Zoo (Green Flash Brewery is an excellent stop)
Central Coast:
-Hearst Castle/elephant seals
-San Luis Obispo/Morro Bay/Paso Robles wine country
-Solvang (quick stop in a adorable Danish town)
-Santa Barbara
