I just wanted to add thanks for all of the advice. I was just in the same predicament. I just called telecharge and was able to get the tickets at the $131 face value rather than the $300 each that the multitude of other websites were listing. I also was able to pick the seats that I thought were the right ones for me rather than letting someone else pick them. It was really easy. Thanks again for the advice.

The "other" websites are scalpers. You use them only if you have to have tickets for a specific night and the official ticket seller is sold out. Otherwise you NEVER buy from anyone but Telecharge or Ticketmaster.

Agree completely. The only "official" sources for Broadway tickets in NY are Telecharge and Ticketmaster. ANY other offerings are resales of tickets that were once offered through the above two sources.
A few Off-Broadway shows will sell tickets at TicketCentral (www.ticketcentral.org)
And some comedy clubs or concerts will be sold on TicketWeb. (www.ticketweb.com)
If in doubt, go to the show's official web site to see what link they give for tickets.
Two sources for Sold Out shows are Caretix and Fund-Tix. Sponsored by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (www.bcefa.org) and Actors' Fund of America(www.actorsfund.org) they sell tickets (house seats)for twice face value, but you can claim one-half of the ticket price as a tax-deductible donation to either cause. (Actors' Fund is also a great source for auction items - many of which are Broadway tickets.)
Top Discount Websites: (the places to find discount codes which are then used at either Telecharge or Ticketmaster to get discounted tickets)
www.playbill.com
www.broadway.com
www.theatermania.com

KathyM, we were in NYC recently and scored 3 rush tickets to Chicago for about $36.50 each. Ticket availability for Chicago seems good because the ticket booth clerk allowed me to purchase 3 seats. I stopped by the theater's ticket booth at around 3 pm and asked about same day discounted tickets. They're great seats btw, center orchestra.

TC has given an excellent rundown. One correction, however: The third listed discount website should be www.broadwaybox.com.

You are so RIGHT, Howard. My big ooops! While Broadway.com does have lots of information regarding shows, they are NOT the site for discount ticket codes. That is indeed, www.broadwaybox.com Thanks for catching my typo.
Cheers!
