budget hotel or condo east side

Looking for a suggestion(s) for a couple of nights at a hotel or condo for mid April. Not a vacation...my husband is going for a hip replacement at a NYC hospital.
Push to shove I could commute from our home in the suburbs.

CAll the hospital. They usually have arrangements with local hotels.

Also, most hospitals will let you stay in the room with your husband unless he is in ICU.

I know I have been able to stay with mine the last two times he's been hospitalized (2003 & 2007). The chair folds down to a bed and I just used his shower.

I would contact the hospital to see if they have any family discount rates arranged with nearby hotels (some hospitals do this.)

You probably want to be as closeas possible to the hospital -- where is it located?

I believe there is a Courtyard Marriott on the Upper East Side but I have not stayed there.

If the hospital doesn't have arrangement with a nearby hotel, this may a time when Priceline works very well. So many people worry in NYC that they will get stuck with a small room or a less than perfect location. Sounds like you won't be in the room all that much, and you're only one person, and surely any location in Manhattan will be better than a daily commute and easy enough to get to the hospital(which one?)

I wouldn't count on the hospital letting you move into the room. they may well let you stay the first night after surgery - but won;t let you stay there 24/7.

Agree, hospitals can usually tell you the places nearby with best rates. Which hospital will he be in?

Thanks to all for suggestions. My husband will be going into Hosp. Special Surgery, York Ave. and 71st St.The rates for their affiliated guest house is about $300./night.I will call them again to check out additional suggestions. I thought I might be able to do better by looking harder.
I'm a NYC-phile and very comfortable with the "mass" transit system.

Most of the hotels on the east side are fairly pricey. Have you looked at the Marriott on E 92nd (I think) St? Only a few minutes away on the bus and often has decent rates.

The Doubletree on Lexington at 51st is around $270 a night. I stayed there last year. The rooms seem freshly decorated and it's conveniently located.
