Broadway show rec for my 25 year old son

My son will be in NYC for several days at the end of July visiting 2 friends. They will be at work during the day. He'd like to take in a matinee. Here's a sample of his likes/dislikes:
Likes - Starlight Express, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Hairspray, Blue Man Group
Dislike - Mamma Mia
Based on this limited list, what Broadway show would you recommend he experience?
Thanks!

In the Heights
Avenue Q
Rock of Ages (if he likes 80's rock music)
Hair (maybe)

I would add 'Chicago' to 'Avenue Q' and 'In the Heights.'

I'd put Hair at the top of the list.

My son has similar likes as your son, and he loved "In the Heights," as did his friends. That would be my absolute #1 recommendation for him. Maybe "Avenue Q" second choice.

This is really helpful - it's actually great to have several choices, too.

Just saw Rock of Ages last night with my 17 -year old son. His first Broadway show and he didn't seem interested in anything so I went ahead and made the executive decision. Even entering the theater he was expecting to hate it. "Are they going to just break out into song? I hate that." "I'm not really into the big hair 80's thing." "Are you going to dance in your seat and sing and totally embarrass me?" He even thought it was weird that they handed out these little LCD lights made to look like the old Bic lighters. Before the show started they were playing many of the original songs - "So I have to listen to these songs now and then hear them again???" (Obviously he isn't an easy-going kid!)

Well, well, well. He actually admitted that he liked it! He thought it was funny, well done, etc. For a kid that loves CG animation and video games this was a pleasant surprise.

I also loved it. I was a bit too old to be into the 80's big rock era. Can't say how I missed it, but I just wasn't listening to Whitesnake. No matter, I loved the show.
