Theater recommendation NY?
Traveling to NY over Easter with my husband and my two children ages 10 and 11. I got tickets for us to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels but Wicked which we wanted to see was sold out. Is there another play you would recommend. My kids don't want to see the children's classics like Lion King and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang anymore as they feel a little too old for that.
Thanks so much

How could someone 10 or 11 be too old for The Lion King? I was in my 50's when I first saw it, and I sure wasn't too old. Do they think it's a cartoon? It is not just for children. Nor is Chitty, Chitty.
But what about Good Vibrations for a musical? Or Fiddler on the Roof?
Or skip the musical and see Steel Magnolias or On Golden Pond?

I saw on GOlden Pond when it opened in DC -- it's a little disappointing-- go for Brooklyn -- music is outstanding - show is a cross between Pippin and Rent and very often the "author" is in the audience or greeting patrons as they leave..a nice touch!

oops, sorry to offend Howard. I simply suggested these musicals because the kids said that they didn't want to see Lion King or Chitty - their choice, not mine. Nancy, can you give us a little more insight on the kids likes/dislikes?

All the pre-teens I know love Blue Man Group - there is very good word of mouth on Slava's Snow Show (we have tix at the end of March); Cookin' downtown on Minetta St. might still be running, that's great fun; if you have girls they might enjoy Little Women, although it hasn't gotten the best reviews, it does have Sutton Foster.
If you want to spend big bucks you could try for Spamalot, but that might be too old for them . . it can be a tough age . . . check out the new victory to see if what's on that week suits your tastes - www.newvictory.org - we just saw a great, funny gory production of Sleeping Beauty by the Young Vic theatre company from England.

Hairspray is one of the most delightful things I've ever seen and I think kids the age of yours would love it to pieces. (Also - it consistently gets the best audience ratings from Zagat, reported in the Wall Street Journal.)
Something that will probably be fun is All Shook Up, which hasn't opened yet & for which you can probably find promotion tickets - it's all Elvis songs and some kind of silly story.
(It's having Chicago tryouts & being given pretty good press.)
And I agree, girls especailly would like Little Women. I saw it. It's a fine presentation of the story with a fine cast.
Stomp is lots of fun for a whole other idea, downtown.

hi Nancyjacky
I would recommend Blue Man Group or Stomp as well. But honestly, the Lion King is still one of the best shows on Broadway - for any age. I've seen it 4 times with friends who come to visit - all in their 20s/30s. It really is awe-inspiring. (The Producers - definitely too old for them, as it was even too old for me! LOL)
Whatever you do, have a wonderful time!
