For starters I think the Freedom trail is an absolute must for a historical overview of Boston. It's easy, great exercise and an amazing no. of historical sights along the way. Plus you can always drop off to eat particularly in the North End.

Go for a swan boat ride - cheap, leisurely, and it gets you to the Public Garden.

Walk Freedom Trail, trek up the Bunker Hill monument and climb aboard the USS Constitution (all free). My grown kids just did this and they had a blast!
