The Ritz Kapalua has just reopened after a 6 month renovation. It should be absolutely beautiful and not to pass up.
The hotels usually have a list of babysitters that you can hire, and if you're not completely comfortable, you can ask for a list of references from each sitter.

GoTravel - not sure why this is in your craw to begin with...just trying to help Melissa out with some suggestions. Aloha, Melissa!
Anyway, as I previously suggested to Melissa, calling the hotel ahead of time and also talking to the front desk upon arrival, are the best ways to negotiate upgrades...not checking the reservation costs online.
My family and I have been regular visitors to the islands for decades. Melissa, if you need more tips, just ask. Some of us love to answer in the spirit of Aloha. 8-)

I would go and take the kids. I have taken a similar trip several years ago. I went NYC-LAX-HNL-Maui with my four children..ages 3-9. I went by myself...it was not much of a vacation....more of a change of scenery!
We stayed at the Grand Wailea and when I arrived the reservation was for the preceding month! The hotel was oversold..during a school vacation...I burst into tears...the poor man felt sorry for me and put me into a 2 bedroom suite. I changed the next day...was too worried with the balcony height..something to consider. Also verify your room prior to leaving Boston!
