Boston car rental

Any recommendations for car rentals that will save on all the extra airport fees? We are flying in to Logan this week... is it worth a taxi ride somewhere for a better rate??

My brother just rented a couple of weeks ago for Boston airport with Avis and was pleased with his price. He called Avis on the phone and received AAA card discount (remember to take your card for proof). He also received a discount for using his Am Express card. He just kept asking for all discount cards available until they named what he had.

I have heard that Cosco is very reasonable.

Some Am Express cards cover your car insurance for a very small fee.

Hope all goes well.

The City of Boston adds 10% to pay for the new convention center, and there are various access fees and tunnel fees.

You might check prices for a pickup at the Marriott in Cambridge (different city but Kendall Square is on the Red Line) to see what the price difference is. I think Budget is located there. My guess that the hassle (see my response to your other post) of getting people and luggage to Kendall (believe me, you don't want to drive back to pick them up) may not be worth what you save. Just be sure that you are being quoted apples and apples -- all fees and taxes included.

Ackislander is so correct, by the time you get everyone and luggage to another point to save a few $$ you have just added frustration and time to the whole procedure that just isn't worth it. Just look at the total cost of the car rental, not all the breakdown, and put that amount into your car budget. Most airports add lots of taxes and fees and they know finding a way around it isn't worth the hassle. Been there, done that.

Just for fun, went to Hertz rental site and checked identical car from airport or downtown Boston for 1 week Mon-Mon in August. After fees, taxes, etc but without optional insurance cost was about $70 less for the week renting in downtown.

After you factor in the cost of 2 cab rides (since you mentioned taxi, not MBTA) the cost difference is minimal. If you factor in aggravation, I would certainly rent at airport.

If you were to take MBTA you would save about $65 - only you can decide if that is worth it or not for you.
