Just to give you a quick trip report.....

It rained from the time we landed until the time we left (48 hours later) with the exception of about 2 hours Friday evening when we did get to go and enjoy our $200/ticket seats at Fenway. The ball park itself is an American treasure and I'm glad we got to see that. We did maneuver our way through the streets during the heavy downpour of rain and found Summer Shack. By the time we got there, even though we were armed with raincoats and an umbrella, we were soaked to the bone. The lobster roll was good, considering I'd never had one, but I would have preferred it be served hot rather than cold. My husband had the fish and chips which was very good, according to him. We found the "T" after leaving Summer Shack and made it back to the Westin without being in the rain for as long. There was no point in getting ready to go out because the weather was terrible. As mentioned earlier, we watched NESN to see when and if the game would be played and left our room when we saw the first pitch. We made our way to Fenway with no trouble, found our seats, and watched in horror as the Yankees had too good of an evening. We left 3 innings later when the rain started again.

Saturday, we had tickets for the "Beantown Trolley" which I wouldn't suggest to anyone! The drivers were rude and didn't want to be helpful at all. Plus, the "old Time Trolley" seemed to have 3 times as many trolleys as the Beantown and we spent too much time waiting around, in the rain, for the trolley to arrive. It was so rainy and cloudy that we couldn't do the harbor cruise - included in the price of trolley tickets - and didn't ever get to see a "view" of Boston from anywhere. We ate at the restuarant in the Westin Saturday evening - Turner's Fisheries, I think it's called - and it was good but very pricey.

Added to the already pounding rain was the threat of hurricane Kyle and not knowing how it would effect our departing flight. Whew! Maybe we'll try Boston another day, another year and enjoy it more. I don't feel like I know much more about it than I did before we left home. Had it not been that I booked the trip with American Express points and they would NOT let us cancel the trip without paying the full price, we would have rescheduled for a later time.

All things considered, I would not have known anything about Boston without your help and advice. Even though we didn't get to see everything we wanted to see, I had a better understanding of the things that were there because of you. Thanks so much for the tips. Maybe I'll use them again one day in the far away future.

Gosh .. I read your post and just wanted to say .. Truly Boston is a great city .. I understand your experience did not lend itself to much exploration of the city this weekend .. Beyond Boston which is one of the best cities in America .. there is the Berkshires .. Cape Cod .. much to see and do .. a short distance from Boston .. Please do come back .. when the rain is not in the forecast .. This was a tough weekend for exploring .. Post again .. should you come back .. and I hope you do .. Remember no matter where you travel with weather as it was this weekend .. it just isn't fun ! !

jcn, thanks for coming back and posting your report. I'm sorry the weather was such a bear this past weekend. I hope you'll come back sometime when its better.

even the Fenway experience wasn't what it should have been, given that the game was meaningless, and the weather so bad that the usual Red Sox-Yankees atmosphere seemed to be missing completely.

jcn, it's raining at the moment. I feel your disappontment. I had a friend visiting from Thursday through Sunday and it rained most of the time until her flight on Sunday. Summertime is wonderful here with all the sidewalk cafes. My favorite outdoor dining is Oleander.

I live just south of Boston. The weather today has been mostly overcast. About an hour ago, a front came through suddenly and for about 10 minutes it was raining buckets, nearly sideways. Now the sun is shining.

Thanks for your compassion, guys. We do hope to return someday in a year or two and take our son to a Red Sox game. I'm sure it's a beautiful city: we could even tell that in the rain. I love the look of the buildings there. You could just feel the history seeping out of them. We did learn some interesting info on the trolley tour.
You can't ever help the weather and when you have plane tickets, you can't postpone or cancel just because of bad weather. We'll try it again one day and when we do, I'll be looking to you for the latest "to do" list.

Thanks!
