Alohaaaaaa...I've had some friends do it and enjoyed it.
VERY nice views. The one time we were going to do it it rained and haven't rescheduled

We rented bikes last trip (Jan 10) and rode the bike path from the Coconut Marketplace waaaay up past Kealia.
Ab-satoot-ley beautiful.

thanks for the info. I like the idea of renting bikes and taking a ride. Something else to think about.

since it rained, did you get a refund or had you not reserved yet?

Shar....we seldom book things ahead of time anymore when we go to Kauai so no ressies. We just watch the weather reports...which are usually wrong on Kauai! lol.

The bike path from Kapaa out past Kealia was about a 60-90 RT but with that path you don't want to haul okole!
Whales a hoppin' in Dec/Jan when we go. Spotted a few turtles too.
Beautiful.

Having driven that road, there is no way on this earth that you are getting me on a bicycle going down it.

I'd rather bicyle UP Waimea Canyon road than down it.

sf...you'd have to do laps on Kauai if it was 90 miles. ;-)
60-90 mins depending on how often you stop and go wow.
Much less if you want to race but......why?

We stayed off the hwy from the Coconut Marketplace to the "trailhead" near the Kapaa Beach and did the sidestreets thru the neighborhoods.

Here are some pix I updated: http://www.worldisround.com/articles...5/photo88.html

I am in Kauai now (Marriott Waiohai timeshare). A few days ago, my son (31 and a marathoner) rented a road bike for $45 and I (59, reasonable shape) a hybrid for $25 and a bike rack for $5 from Outfitters Kauai. Along with our wives, we drove to Wiamea Canyon for the views, then to the top for the Pu'u O Kila Lookout of the NaPali coast (maybe the most beautiful vista ever). We did the first mile (muddy)and back of the Pihea trail hike. Then the wives drove back to the Marriott. The ride down was great, except for the potholes on the first few miles before the canyon (the road bike had a more difficlt time than the hybrid which had shocks). Though steep, it was less scary than I had feared, mostly because traffic was light. I think only a half dozen cars passed us on the 15 miles or so trip down. In Waimea, we had Coconut Shrimp at the Shrimp Station and shave ice at JoJo's (both great). The rest of the ride home (22 miles) was gruelling - lots of hills, heat, and headwinds and lots of traffic, though the shoulder of the road was usually wide enough. My younger, more fit son with the better bike left me in the dust. I needed a massage the next day.
Conclusion - you can do it yourself if you have someone to shuttle you, but the non-downhill part is not much fun, more for the serious biker. The views were nice, but did not compare to the downhill ride I did years ago at Haleakala on Maui.
