Big family in NY. Is Long Island City a good choice?

We live in the East Village and it takes about 45 to visit friends on West 84 St. And LIC still has an industrial, they are now building all sorts of residences there including some luxury apartments.
BTW, if you want to go a very nice restaurant try Tournesol in LIC.

"And I would much rather be walking there than an area with warehouses and auto body shops."
What area are you referring to?
There are no warehouses or body shops between Lexington Av and 5th Av either at 86th St or 103rd St.

And with a little research, they could ensure they never encounter the industrial area of LIC. (Believe it or not, I've been there several times and have never been near one warehouse or body shop.)

Try The Beacon Hotel, on the upper west side. They have 2 bedroom, 2 bath suites with a kitchen and sitting area. You could have one King bed, two doubles, and a sofa sleeper.
Personally, I think you'd be missing out, if you stay outside of Manhattan. Just wouldn't be the same.

Yes, the Beacon gets good reviews for one of the few suites that will hold 6 people and has 2 baths. But I fear the price will be quite a bit more than LIC.
To get info on the suite you have to call the hotel directly - it won't come up on the web site.

>>LIC is safe but areas are not particularly pleasant - are mixed use with budget motel, warehouses and auto body shops etc. Do not expect to find services near without checking - assume you will be having dinner in Manhattan.

Ferry is not a great idea for a family of 6 with budget issues since it costs way more than the subway. Also it runs only every 20 minutes versus every 4 or 5 for the subway.
And that works only if you stay right next to the river - not many of the hotels.

Stay in LIC AngieDur, my DH and I stayed there for a week three years ago as my daughter was living there. It is very convenient to get into Mnahattan, we travelled in every day. Honestly it is so quick to get to midtown, about two subway stops. It is not all industrial areas, there are a lot of restaurants, nice parks, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the area.
