Best time to visit New York!

Hello everyone!
My friends and I just got back from NY and can't wait to go back! We were there Aug. 23- Aug 31 and it rained the whole time! Being from Seattle, we are used to the rain, but not a huge fan of it during our vacation. We were wondering when the best time to visit New York is? Besides Thanksgiving and Christmas, what months do you suggest? I miss your beautiful city! Please help!

My favorite time for weather is Sept. but you can also get rain then.

Go to wunderground.com and have some fun looking at historic weather on their trip planner.

I was there this past March and it was great. Lines were not as long as they could be for things like the Empire State Building. It was chilly but we sat on a patio for lunch a few times.

It was around the 17th I believe.

I forgot about that! I will have to work on it very soon. Let's just say, I took over 500 pictures!! I never thought I would fall in love with another city. I feel like a traitor. ;0)

I love May and June. Not usually hellishly hot yet, somewhat less chance of rain, tres in leaf, flowers in bloom, outdoor cafes on every block - and the start of a lot of summer activies (street fairs, special programs in the parks and even some in Bryant Park and Lincon Center).

I am so sorry you exerienced the worst week ever in our city! Ordinarily, summer in the City is hot, hazy, and humid; your week was an aberration. Please return! Summer is ordinarily good because many hotels offer lower rates; spring is good too because hardly anyone is on vacation yet. Autumn is VERY expensive all the way through New Years; winter has fierce weather that you might not survive. The choice is of course yours.

I was in NYC at the beginning of reyabeyna's time there, from August 23-27. It didn't rain the whole time. On Thurs. 8/24, it was cloudy in the afternoon, and a very cool rainstorm moved in for about two hours that evening, then it stopped. On Fri. 8/25, it didn't rain at all, it was just cloudy but nice temperature-wise; we walked all over downtown and Soho. Sat. 8/26 it was again cloudy but never rained; we walked all over the Village. 8/27 was a rainy day, but it was only drizzle all morning (we were outside at the Chihuly exhibit at NY Botantical Gardens) and didn't really start downpour til 2 pm.

I know what it can be like in NYC in August (a complete sauna every time you step outside) and for much of the summer as I was planning the trip I kept thinking I was NUTS to go then. But this was a very very pleasant time to be in NYC. I never once sweat the entire time, and I was wearing long sleeves! And on Sunday it was cool to point of needing a jacket. MUCH better than weather in the upper 90s with high humidity. After the July heat wave w/temps at 100 degrees, I thought what we experienced was incredibly good weather for NYC in August.

So reyabneya, I think you lucked out on at least the first part of your trip. I can't imagine anyone choosing the gross hot/humid weather over the coolness/cloudiness and partial rain we had those days.

I hope you get better weather next time, but it can be cloudy any time, and rain any time most of the year, even October or April (the usually great weather months in NYC) or snow in winter. One thing great about NYC is that you can adjust the schedule and still have a great time.
