Best route San Francisco to Muir Woods ending at Point Reyes

Can anyone tell me what is the best route to take from San Fracisco to go to Muir Woods and ending at Point Reyes some one had said it was a beautiful road and would appreciate some suggestions. Also, would it be too horrible to go on a Saturday weekend of Memorial? I will have additional days at the end of my trip but, just wanted to know if it would be wise to get it done at the start. THank you for your assitance.

If you have the option of going on a workday instead, you'll avoid crowds at both destinations. I stongly suggest you take this trip toward the end of your stay.

Go over the Golden Gate and take the Highway 1 exit. Follow Hwy 1 until you see the sign for Muir Woods. At the Muir Woods turn-off there are three options, take the left one. From Muir Woods, keep on going to the ocean. You will rejoin Hwy 1. If you reach Point Reyes Station, you have gone too far. Backtrack half a mile and turn right and follow that road through Inverness to the end. It will take you to the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

I would not do the trip on a weekend if possible, particularly not Memorial Day weekend.

Definitely try for a weekday, preferably earlier on a weekday. The last time I went to Muir Woods it was a Thursday in October around 11 am. We had to drive around the parking lot to find a space.

I was intersted in this route too. We are going next Thursday. How about from Point Reyes to Sonoma (town)?

Judyrem-
From Pt. Reyes/Olema:
From the intersection of Hwy 1 & Sir Francis Drake take SFD about 2 miles to the Point Reyes-Petaluma Rd. Turn left.

Travel about 10 miles into Petaluma.
In Petaluma the PR-Pet Rd. becomes D Street. (Now wave to me as you drive down D Street Stay on D for 4-5 miles
until you reach Lakeville ST. Turn right.

Follow Lakeville under Hwy 101
(at some pt. here it becomes Lakeville Hwy/CA Hwy 116) for about 3 miles to
Frates Rd. Turn left.

Frates will run in to Adobe Rd.Take Adobe Rd. for another 3 miles and
follow it's bend to left as it becomes Stage Gulch Rd./and CA Hwy 116 again.
Follow this about 4 miles tp Watmaugh Rd. Turn left and follow this over to Broadway/ CA 12. Turn left and the Town Square is about 2 Miles or so.

I will wish for sunny weather for your visit here !

Thanks Razzle, great directions, I appreciate it. I did a weather.com 10 day forecast and it looks ok...BUT that is 10 days away ;-). I love CA!

Well on Sunday morning we left SF and went up to Forestville/heart of sonoma via hwy 1 It is a spectacular drive however I would not like to do it in a backseat and i may not want to do it if I was not driving. the weather was beautiful but it was still slow going, although traffic was not bad a fair amount of hairpins will keep even the best drivers at a slow pace. We drove through many great little hamlets but had to stop at Bovines bakery in Pt. Reyes station when we looked over and saw a line out the door...of course we had to stop. We did stop at the Golden Gate overview and a couple more times briefly but it ended up taking about 4 hours from SFO to Forestville Via Hwy 1.
Next time we visit the SF area we will probably plan a trip around Pt Reyes.
