Best florida spots for families?
My family is thinking of taking a trip to Florida, either the first week of February or the middle of May. Traveling are, four adults and two small children, ages 5 and just under 2. Were looking to rent a house on the beach but do not know where to begin! We've all been to Disney World numerous times, and are looking for a more laid back vacation this time around. Since calm, clear waters are a must, I'm assuming the gulf coast on the west would be a better idea than the eastern side. We'd like a nice town, with some shopping, good restaurants, some nightlife, golf, but not an overly crowded party town full of drunken college students. Mainly we're looking to relax and let the kids play on the beach, and explore a little. We really love the tropical feel, clear, calm water and palm trees.. any suggestions are appreciated!!

What you're describing can be found on Longboat Key, Anna Maria Island and Siesta Key. Three sister keys just outside of Sarasota Florida. Great flights from many areas into Sarasota and into Tampa.
For shopping and restaurants you can't be St Armands Circle which is just below Longboat Key and an easy access from any of the islands For nightlife probably Sarasota as it's a fun hip city.
But when it comes to beaches these three cannot be topped. Each has white, talcum powder sand that's wonderful to walk on - not harsh and grainy. Beaches are definitely not overcrowded.
Check it out - I think you'll love it!!

There will be a big difference in water temp. from Feb. to May. I think Destin is absolutely gorgeous. You will not find prettier beaches - the water is the most amazing green you will find and the sand is white, white powder! Definately the Gulf Coast, not East side. Destin has the largest outlets in the country. It can get very busy, but not so much in Feb./May. I would try and go in May. Whereever you decide, I think May would be better. As the others have mentioned Anna Maria Island/Siesta Key are very nice also but I personally prefer Destin/Ft. Walton area (in the Panhandle) the downside is flying into it is not as easy as Tampa/Sarasota.

What you are describing can be found on Siesta Key. Go in May rather than February and the rates for condos will be much lower. We have stayed at Siesta Dunes which are 2 bedrooom condos located right on the water and I can highly recommend this location.

I recommend Destin as well, but definitely in May and not February. It is cold in Feb. in the panhandle. In May there are no spring break crowds (spring break runs March to about the middle of April) and it is still the off-season so you can get very good deals. Average temp in May is 75 with an average high of 82.
As mentioned, flying in is not as convenient as flying to bigger locations. Your choices are Destin (VPS), Panama City, and Pensacola.
