Best airport for Asheville?

I will be driving to Asheville from Chgo late Fall to meet up with a friend from NYC (who does not drive). Which is city airport is best to advise her to fly into for me to meet up with her? After our stay in Asheville, I then have to drive back to Santa Fe, NM which is my home.....want to conserve somewhat on my driving as this is a big road trip for me.

Depends on where she is coming from but Charlotte is the only major airport that is close. Although you can fly into Asheville as well or Greensboro for that matter. In either of those cases you would still likely connect in CLT.

I would have her fly to Charlotte and rent a car and drive the 2 hours to meet you in Asheville. You picking her up in Charlotte and dropping her back off is way out of your way.

Alternatively, have her fly (making a connection) to Asheville.

Sorry, didn't see the "does not drive" thing. Only real option is to fly to Asheville.

Continental serves Asheville so that may be a good possibility.

Asheville (AVL)airport is an ideal airport for visiting Asheville. It is small and friendly. Continental flies directly to AVL from EWR. We also used Greenville, SC (GSP) a couple times.

consider your route and try to pick her up before you get to North Carolina -- if you are going through Knoxville perhaps she could fly into there.

Thanks everyone, especially pat2003 - that's very good news that CO goes directly from EWR. I still have no idea why I could not access your replies until today. Wrote to Fodors but didn't get a response -- does this happen regularly these days? I've been away from this site for quite a while . . . .

I did this (I do know how to navigate this site) 2 days ago and nothing recent came up - that's why I am asking. Could it really take 2 days for something to come up?

I am sorry if I came off being huffy. I had topped your original post for you on your second posting as well. On both occasions it came up immediately. I just did a click on my screenname and two postings I did yesterday did not appear. I guess there are quirks in this system! I apologize if I seemed unpleasant, I was trying to be helpful.
Enjoy your visit to Asheville.

I've been having that problem for a few months now. First click of my name pulled up posts from a couple days ago, but the second click always pulls up the most recent. I've learned to live with it.
