If you don't plan to rent a car, then you ought to stay in Waikiki. Unless you know what you want, it doesn't make much difference which part of Waikiki you stay in. There are restaurants, shops, etc. all throughout Waikiki. No matter where you stay, you are no more than 3-4 blocks from the beach.

This site shows most of the Waikiki hotels:

http://www.driveguidemagazines.com/oahu_waikiki.html

You can try these sites to compare hotels:

www.bookit.com

www.hawaii-hotels.com Scroll to the bottom and where it says VISIT, click on either Oahu hotels or Oahu condos.

www.hawaii.com

Many Waikiki hotels offer a 5th night free so maybe you can extend your stay an extra night for the same price.

If you don't rent a car, you can get a 4-day bus pass for $20.

Do you mean in Waikiki? Or the North Shore? Or both places? They are on different sides of Oahu not near to each other.

If you mean the north shore of Oahu, try Ke Iki Beach Bungalows. A regular fodorite poster raves about the place. As dusty says, you will need a car if you stay up there.

For a good value in Waikiki i really like The Hawaiiana Hotel on Beach Walk (street name, near Fort deRussy Park). It and The Breakders next door are the only smaller, low-rise, old school kind of hotels in the area.
